It's interesting. In my view, making the site liable is a very grey area. It's as though someone made a libellous poster and stuck it up on a lamp-post outside someone's house, only for the manufacturer of the paper the poster was printed on to end up in court.
I suspect it was the thread about Betty Battenberg's 90th birthday. It appears to have vanished. Interesting how threads about alleged sexual assault and the monarchy can both quickly lead to name calling and anger amongst those not remotely involved.
You could look on an almost daily basis. I think people need to be aware that as new laws get passed, we are under more and more scrutiny when posting online. The Ched Evans thread and the one which stated the queen killed Diana, along with many other unfounded claims about the Royal family, are definitely on the edge. Tbf it happens every day. I just thought I'd point it out.
I'd forgot about the same bloke stating the Queen killed Diana. He must have been on a mission last night.
Don't you think though that some people would find it offensive to hear you call Her Majesty "Betty Battenburg"? Anyone with a basic grasp of history will know that our royal family came from all over Europe, including Germany, but it's not really funny to call her that......is it? Perhaps I'm being over sensitive but I'm one of those proud to have served HM so I don't think that being so disrespectful is, in any way, a good thing. I appreciate that having a constitutional monarchy will always divide opinion but, even so, it's not right to call her that.
To HM The Queen, yes, but my attestation was way back in 1970 so I can't remember the details of the oath.
You'd have been better of replying to me on the point wouldn't you? I'm not overly concerned if it offends to be honest, although to be fair that wasn't my intention, it was a glib turn of phrase. But on a more serious point, she isn't special, she's a normal woman who happens to have been born into a wealthy and privileged family. I don't hate her or want harm to come of her or anything so crass, but I certainly don't revere her and if our paths ever crossed I'd not bow, stand in line or call her ma'am. To be fair that's unlikely to happen.
This. I've nothing against the Queen personally, she generally seems to know her place and keep her nose out of owt that actually matters. My opposition is that we, as a society, should promote equality of opportunity. Being ruled (even if only notionally) by someone who only acquired the position due to an accident of birth cuts right across that. I just hope Charles gets the throne at some point because he's such a stupid meddling cretin that it might spell the end of the monarchy.
Yes, I apologise for putting the reply in the wrong place. I shouldn't faff about in here when I'm trying to write interesting articles about Vietnamese and Japanese 19th century poets! Yes, that's the kind of thing I do for a (sort of) living! I ought to concentrate on the day job and leave controversial BBS commentary alone
No need to apologise and liking the Royal family isn't controversial. You should have pointed out that Battenburg was Phil's mum's maiden name to make me look a right plonker.
