"It is believed the handbrake had snapped or was not put on properly -"

so either the police are not maintaining their cars in a roadworthy condition or and much more likely someone forgot to put it on - fortunately we can take the piss as no one was injured but it really is quite serious and people could have been seriously injured or worse

I still dont understand why the conventional wisdom is you shouldnt park in gear - I always do but I think thats now frowned upon

I do exactly the same Dave

park in gear that is... the handbrake is on also, and sometimes in winter or if the cars are gonna be parked a good while then just parked in gear (I have had a handbrake seized/stuck on more than one occasion)... 1st if pointing uphill...reverse if pointing downhill. But these days, mate, there is a commodity that's lacking.... its called Common Sense.

You sometimes park up WITHOUT applying the handbrake and you say others are lacking common sense?

Re: I do exactly the same Dave

If its very cold and snowy and the car is going to be left for a while the handbrake can freeze on. its a common problem in for example ski resorts or central Europe where it can be very cold. I have done the same occasionally but never needed to do it in Surrey
