Does anyone know why the club coaches are leaving at 8.00 for a 3.pm kick-off, when they left at 8.30 for the JPT 2pm kick off, is there a reason why they are going so early? I have looked at all the roadworks on the M1 and there doesn't appear to be any new ones to when we went down before. I usually set off by car at the same time but think its a bit early.

Half seven gives you time to go and have a drink before the game if you're so minded. I'm heading down with the Penistone Reds and we're on the road at 6:30!!

Did they stop at services for JPT final?

Am going with Ship inn and they go at 7.30 am, I presume they'll have a 30 min stop at services.

Bank holiday w/e would imagine roads busier than JPT day.

Even with a good service stop it's only a four hour journey. It just seems very early to me.

Watford Gap services was jammed with Reds fans on the way to the JPT (I was in my car so cannot comment on setting off times). I suppose really though it's better to be early than risk getting there late.

I don't drive to Wembley - I take the easier route to Princes Risborough and take a 20 minute train journey which stops right next to the stadium. No traffic problems, Chiltern Train services which are fast and efficient and only £17.20 return fare, plus my fuel to Risborough and back.

Getting to Wembley is stressful enough, especially for convoys of buses, so I prefer the easy option

£17.20 for a 20 minute train journey! I'd hardly use the word "only" :)

Sorry, don't know why I said 20. It's near to 40 minutes, depending on the service. Some only stop at High Wycombe and Beaconsfield, then Wembley, while others stop everywhere including the exotically named Seer Green and Jordans station.

All I'm trying to say that it's a less stressful way to get to Wembley. I can enjoy the comfort of my own car for the majority of it, then a fast train towards London. Plenty of other Reds fans did the same for the Cardiff game but I didn't see any for the Oxford one. Unless they came a bit later than me of course.

It's because Police are expecting a four - day convoy of 8 million Wednesday fans on the roads. Amazed you never realised to be honest. There'll be spot checks looking for Wednesday fans clinging to axles / hiding in luggage etc. Illegal piggies.

That should have no effect on my route. I get off the M1 at one of two places.

First option is 15A Northampton then the A43 down through Towcester, skirting Milton Keynes on the A5 then on to Aylesbury and Princes Risborough.
Second option is Jct 14 which is close to MK but then you have the nausea of going round about 50 roundabouts before gettting clear of the town.

Not exactly tourist routes - seaside destinations etc - so the roads will be relatively clear. I used to to do that trip when I lived in Risborough so I know it well.

Isn't M42 / M40 best for PR? Come off near vicar of dibley bit? Just wondered.

I'm doing National Express again. Setting off at 9, getting there at 12:30. Plenty early enough for me, I felt like I had far, far too long waiting around for the JPT as I wasn't really interested in spending £5 a go on pints and my dad didn't want to drink anyway. For people who aren't bothered about getting there that early (I still feel like 2 and a half hours before is early tbh), I'd definitely recommend it. The coaches went straight from Barnsley bus station through with no stops and parked up smack under the steps at Wembley - couldn't get lost if you tried! £31 each (with £1 booking fee per booking, not ticket) and 25% discount for groups of 4 or more.

I've tried that route, yes, and it is further in mileage plus you run the risk of hold ups on the M42. If there is something at the NEC for example it can be a problem. Add to that the notorious M42/Birmingham camera traps. I'd rather avoid it.

The Towcester route is a breeze. It's dual carriageway from the M1 almost to the town, then an arrow straight A5 heading for MK, then going past it. As I said, going this way avoids Roundabout City and is also very fast. The slow part is when you hit the Aylesbury Road, but it's not far from there. The approach to Risborough, via Stoke Mandeville, Great Kimble and Monks Risborough is a real pleasure to drive. Easy park at the station or free a few minutes walk away (easy on Sunday), a cup of tea at one of the most charming station buffets on the rail network and then a clean, fast ride to Wembley.

For me it's all about the quality of the journey and going in the company of a coach load of people then being herded by the police for the last few miles is NOT an option.

Fair enough. I have been doing 15A for the last four months to get to Hanslope Park and/or Stony Stratford. Give me those back roads over the MK roundabouts any day.

PS The Vicar of Dibley location is a bit further on. Going down the M40 to Risborough you would get off near Tiddington and head in via Longwick. If you carried on a bit further Dibley was filmed mostly around the Turville area which is south of the M40, between Stokenchurch and Wycombe.

That's the point though Andy - the A5 bypass misses virtually all of them out, going parallel to the railway line a lot of the way. MK is great as a novelty destination, but only once! After that it becomes a pain - I went there quite a few times for different reasons.

Pleasant place to live in some ways, if not a bit surreal.

Have been around MK for the last 18 months on and off. Bit soul destroying in hotels down there but if you like modern stuff I can kind of get the idea of living there. I had to move along to Stony though for my own sanity. Also, been taking my bike and doing the 'Millenium Circular Route' on an evening. There are some beautiful hidden gems of villages skirting CMK. With lovely old pubs. ;)
