I think we're better than Millwall. I think we're much, much better than them. This team has only been together a few months; during most of this amazing run they've still been finding their feet, still learning one another's game. Over the past few games it's really clicked in to place. Hourihane and Brownhill dominate midfield. They're bigger, stronger, more athletic and better players than the opposition, whoever the opposition is. Roberts and Mawson pick up the opposition forwards and pop them in their pockets. If anyone has the temerity to take on Williams he puts them in the wall bottom. Scowen will do the same. Isgrove and Hammill run the opposition full backs ragged. Fletcher has a touch that few defenders at this level can cope with. Winnall bangs it in the back of the net. If anyone gets through all that lot, Davies calmly takes the ball and gives it us back to start again. We're fresher, fitter, stronger, faster and more skilful than any other team in this division. We want it more and we're prepared to put in the hard work to get it. How could you not feel confident? And yet, whenever I've felt confident about anything in my life I've always ended up on my ******* arse.
just posted summat on this on a different thread...so i'll just copy it here was having a look at some stats earlier. people have watched the semis and gone away thinking we'll have too much for them. i'm probably in that camp as well. but if you look over the last 10 games, millwall's stats are better all round. wins, points, goals scored and goals conceded are all better than ours. meanwhile, gregory and morison have nearly 50 goals between them this season. i honestly don't think there's anything between the two teams. i think it will come down to who wants it most on the day..
I read it Marc, and there's no arguing with the stats. Also, Millwall are a good team who absolutely deserve their place in the play-off final. But from what I've seen of them and what I've seen of us, I think we're a level up. No doubt that will come back to bite me on the arse.
My real worry is not a defeat; I can live with that. It's how ungracious in victory their fans would be. We saw the outcome of their win over Bradford on Friday. A colleague's parents were on an official Bradford coach and it was attacked on the way out with everything & anything the locals could find, apparently. Old people & kids on a bus. Brilliant. If Milwall try and take us on we should beat them. If they bully us it could be a different story. The 2 lads upfront are a big threat. Roberts and Mawson have the physical presence to deal with them in the air, but the movement and gamesmanship will be a much bigger threat than any other strike partnership we have faced recently. One place we need to be wary of is crosses in the box. Roberts and Mawson always attack the ball on crosses. Recently they are winning almost everything. But as a result of attacking every ball every so often a striker or midfield runner will find himself caught in between the 2 with space to finish. Morrison and Gregory are both excellent at pulling centre half around the 18 yarder and fidning space. Robbo and Maws may need to be a little more canny in their positioning. If they want to hoof the ball down the centre though thats bread and butter for our lads.
Five huge games at national stadiums in 16 years and somehow we manage to draw Cardiff and ******* Millwall. People still talk about the Ipswich game regularly, even though we lost. It will be the same with the JPT victory over Oxford. Part of it is the game, and it will certainly be about lifting the cup in the JPT, but it's the overall experience too. Oxford and Ipswich fans were part of that. I very rarely hear anyone reminisce about the FA Cup semi-final against Cardiff. It's like it never happened. The result obviously didn't help, but their fans spoiled the experience. Millwall could make it even worse.
My thoughts entirely as you said leaving out the actual match we had great days and a great atmosphere in the Oxford and ipswich games The e pertinence against Cardiff was most unpleasant. I fear the same against Millwall im also worried as well. Like you I think we are a better side and think we should be favourites going in to this game. But Millwall are no mugs they have 2 excellent strikers, and a decent defence as well. In a one off game they could very easily beat us. Also unfortunately I think they will know they can't out football us so they will be focus sing on stopping us playing so I don't expect the game to be a classic either
I don,t see any other result except us winning we have the big game mentality and can,t see us not turning up on the day.
Bradford home? Were you confident before that? I think I was. Although I was also very very nervous!!
I think so. I wasn't so confident in that second half though when our players were so nervous and so weighed down by our history that they forgot how to kick a ball and were struggling to walk.
You forget we,ve played there 6 weeks ago if anybody don,t turn up it will be millwall,I know luck is involved to some degree but like i say we,ll win probably comfortably as well.
Brilliant post Jay. Sums up my feelings entirely. No way am I going into this game full of complacency.
Agree with all that post except the bit about fresher. We might look it (which is good, and a credit to the lads) but **** me we must me physically and mentally exhausted after the heroics since Xmas. I fully believe they will have a focussed, professional "one more big game" attitude, but I can't help feeling they must be feeling it. Total empathy. Whenever I gob off, I'm shown up to be wrong (England / Shearer / Euro 96 spring to mind - told anyone who would listen that we would fail, England were pants and Shearer couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo). Similarly, whenever I predict success, I'm shown up to be a clueless buffoon. However, I have quietly watched this team grow. I thought we'd achieved gallant failure by struggling in those last few home games, only to see two of our best performances come in the Play-off legs. After that away match last week, I am so quietly confident that we have peaked perfectly that I am just not going to shout it to anyone. This week is going to be fcecking murder :-(
I agree with you 100%. I feel that if BOTH teams bring their "A" game next week then we win because of the quality of our wide players. However, Millwall are formibable, they do not give up, they have talented and physically imposing players. We will have to be at our very best to beat them.
The big decision for me is Scowen or White. Scowen deserves a chance but if anything goes wrong down that side no one can say it hasn't been coming. My gut feeling is to put White in. It straight away gives Milwall something to think about as I'm sure their plan will be the get down the outside of Scowen. That being said I'd be gutted to see Scowen not get a much deserved Wembley start.
my concern is they bully us off the park. if we can win the fight first we can then go on and win the game of football and outclass them. was it roy keane that said that?
