I think I would have to say Danny's top, they achieved more than any Barnsley side ever have and gave us a brilliant, if not ultimately disappointing season, but for the shear joy of watching the side play, the atmosphere, esp away games when we literally took thousands, had one of the best away followings in the country at the time..Norman's side...both were brilliant times...
I can understand why some would put the Wilson promotion team above the Hunter side, obviously they did something no other Barnsley side has done but in my opinion the Hunter team also came very close. They were a fantastic team to watch.
Having seen every team since mid 70s. Hunter's 81-82 Clarke's 78-79 Hecky's 15/16 Wilson's 96-97 Bassett's 99-00 Ritchie's possibly - 05-06
Maybe a bit early to say yet. If the current side goes up and stays together then I genuinely believe they have the potential to go far. It would be thrilling to see what they can do over a full season in the second tier.
A side that finished 6th in Division 3 better than one that hot promoted to the premiership. That's just peculiar
Didn't think 12 months I would be saying this, but Adam Davies in for Watson would have been a huge improvement.
But this side didn't finish 6th. Isgrove fletcher brownhill hammill Williams only played half a season and in that half we were top
We still finished 6th however you cut it up. That's what the history books will show. You get no mercy for not turning up for half a season. Balanced against a team universally admired that we automatic promotion from a division above. None f our current team is anywhere near good enough to get in the Wilson promotion team or Hunter's team.
Hard to split the Hunter and Wilson teams for me. Arguably, man for man, Bassett's side was better than them. One missing link stopped us going up automatically that season. Arjan De Zeeuw. Sent from my SM-T710 using Tapatalk
Absolutely spot on, the one that was holding it's own with the elite of English football, beating Manchester United, Liverpool, Villa, Spurs etc etc.
I'm not sure if there's much to choose between Hammill and Bullock. Bully was definitely quicker and trickier but Hammill has a much better end product, both shooting and crossing. Had he been in the 96-97 squad he'd have definitely got a fair bit of game time IMHO. I also think that Sam Winnall is a more talented striker than Paul Wilkinson, and will go on to be a better player, as will Ashley Fletcher. However that's not knocking Wilko, as his wily know-how and experience were an absolutely vital component of that side, even if he was slow and his finishing could be a touch eratic.
I think potentially Fletcher is a better player than Wilkinson. Winnall would I presume more in competition with Hendrie than Wilkinson. I was never particularly a fan of Wilkinson but In to him he was an established forward at the upper levels of the championship. Bullock we would have to agree to disagree on. I see Adam as a fantastic League 1/ good lower half of the Championship player whereas Bullock was top of the Championship class. To be fair you are right about end product but I'd say they both had an equal impact on the team but at different levels of achievement and ambition
I think you're absolutely spot on with that observation. It's my opinion that if we'd had either one of Watson or De Zeeuw in that sidewe'd have gone up automatically. Having both, we'd have challenged an excellent Charlton side for the title. The loss of Watson was a piece of incredible ill-fortune. Casting off De Zeeuw then pissing about with Tuttle, Chettle and Keith Brown as his potential replacement must go down as one of Dave Bassett's worst, and most inexplicable managerial decisions.
