Gutting as it was, in my opinion it was one of the most important moments of our season, as it proved once and for all what a useless tactic trying to defend a one-goal lead for any amount of time is. It's no coincidence that in every match since then we've continued pouring forward even with games clearly won. Loved seeing us chasing a 4th yesterday going into the final minutes. Amazing to watch.
I thought that was it for our season after Colchester equalised. Never expected 4-1, 3-0, 3-1, 3-1 and promotion after that. Against, 1st, 3rd, 3rd and 4th too. I think partly the reason why we've done so well in each of those games is that we've continued to look for more goals.
Funnily enough it was possibly the best thing that could have happened. It meant we had to go to Wigan and win. That win gave us more self belief and much more momentum and intensity than had we been able to cruise during the Wigan game.
Fellow BBS'er 55&Counting witnessed my reaction to that goal, and the blind fury of the moment seems to have achieved legendary status around those that sit near us. However, I did remark that the players, when they came out for the 'lap of honour' had the look of a team that had been relegated about them. For me, that told me all I needed to know that they were feeling it as much as I was, and I agree that it seems to have been some sort of catalyst for what was to follow. With hindsight, it probably was the final piece in the jigsaw. It certainly didn't feel like it at the time.
Read somewhere on one of them match fact sites on way home yesterday, its the first time we have scored 3 or more goals in four consecutive games since 1965!!!!
I said in my report of that game that they look like condemned men taking a last walk round the exercise yard before going to their executions. A bit melodramatic, I know, but they were completely floored by it and the last thing they wanted was to be walking round the pitch, especially with so few left in the ground.
Hopefully we'll be making that five as we give a good wellying to a demoralised and disorganised Aston Villa on the opening day of next season
