Not a name that will mean much to you unless you have followed Fairport Convention and the electric-folk scene since the 1960s like I have. He was one of the great fiddle players and was still performing until the emphysema that he has battling against got too much for him. I had the pleasure of speaking to him during the interval at Nettlebed folk club a few years ago when he was performing with another legend - Martin Carthy. He was as much a giant in the folk music world as Muhammed Ali was in boxing, so RIP to both of them. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-36443117
Me too - about 1971? Seen them countless times but only that once in Barnsley. Opened with Swarb spotlighted at the edge of the stage, launching into "The Hexhamshire Lass". How about that for an awesome memory!
He was the fiddle player in Far From The Madding Crowd, the film with Julie Christie and Alan Bates. (1970s) Great folk violinist.
Probs the best fiddler of his generation. Saw him many times with Fairport (incl the late great sandy Denny). RIP Swarb
