"Drivers using a hands-free phone get just as distracted as those holding it in their hand, researchers have found. Scientists at the University of Sussex found conversations can cause the driver to visually imagine what they are talking about." So what next... banning passengers 'cos you might actually talk to them?? Never heard such a load of codswallop in my life!!
I know one thing a car with Kids in the back is a lot more of a distraction than talking on a hands free mobile phone I also know something else on long motorway journeys I stay a lot more alert if I have either someone to talk to or something to listen to - preferably spoken rather than soothing music than if I am in silence with just the lull of the engine
I saw this effect being 'demonstrated' by the police. They had a bloke do mental arithmetic and then the cop started yelling stuff in his ear. The bloke couldn't concentrate and so the effect was conclusive. Hmm... Science, yo! In other news, certain folk down here want on the spot fines for people using their mobile phones whilst walking.
Probly more sociology than science. I like the birds who text and do their make up at the same time, whilst driving. Multi-tasking bitches!!
I have to use hands-free in the car. It's the only way I can smoke a *** and eat a steak slice at the same time.
I used to be like that until I gave up smoking, then I realised I could shave myself instead with the newly freed up hand
Scientists doing research eh and finding things out. Who'd have thought that would be a good idea.....
The next thing they'll discover is that we really did land on the moon in the 60s and 70s. Everyone knows that the so-called moon landing scenes were actually filmed in and around an old abandoned lead mine in Upper Swaledale in North Yorkshire.
Yerbut...who is funding such meaningless research!!. After all common sense dictates the conclusion is not going to change anything. There are many distractions when driving... tuning radio, changing CD, Kids arguing in back, following Satnav instructions, taliking to wife/ partner/work colleague. Short of banning them (and that is not even remotely possible or enforceable, it is just stating the bleeding obvious) you don't need a load of expensive scientific research to come to the same conclusion. I agree with a post on here that the kids in the back are one of the biggest distractions. the only accident I have had in 40 years was approaching junction at top of Old Mill lane by the college. I was slowing with two cars in front of me. At the exact moment I looked back to tell my 5 year old and her friend to stop squabbling a car pulled out in front of the car two ahead of me forcing them to make an emergency stop. Normally I leave enough room but on this one occasion as we were slowing already I was late on the brake and just - (I literally broke the headlamp lens but not the bulb) - hit the car in front. Forunately very little damage but my pride was hurt especially as I worked at the college and one or two people I knew saw it happen. So according to our research scientists we should probably ban children from sitting in cars. I suspect your sarcasm is aimed at me as you seem to have a personal issue with most things I post. Stupid to imply that I think all scientific research is pointless but some research projects and conclusions beggar belief!!
I think this woman should take up smoking! http://www.nbc-2.com/story/12107993/woman-causes-crash-shaving-bikini-area-while-driving
We don't agree on many things but my post was just having a bit of sarcasm and a jape, it wasn't aimed at you, scientists or indeed anyone in particular! I'm often bored at work so post random bo*****ks usually
There is a quote from a scientist who studied scientist. The chance is high that the "truth" lies in the fashionable direction. But, on the off-chance that it is in another direction — a direction obvious from an unfashionable view of field theory — who will find it? Only someone who has sacrificed himself by teaching himself XXXX from a peculiar and unfashionable point of view; one that he may have to invent for himself. In other words scientists will look for what they want to look for (their version of the truth) to make money, fame and headlines. And cor blimey suprise suprise they find "the truth"
