People blaming Hodgson for taking Rooney off for Wilshere, which apparently was negative. I don't see what's negative about replacing Rooney with someone who was playing in the same position as him. People are saying Vardy should have come on, but why bring on a striker when winning? Almost nobody does it, and I dare say that might have been potentially most costly. I honestly just think people are looking for something to blame; I don't think the substitutions made any difference to the game. Anyway hopefully England can recover from a late equaliser in the same way we did after the Colchester game!
Agreed. It was the best England tournament performance in years. We switched off for 20 seconds at the end and paid the price but we created chances throughout the game. If we play like that again vs the Welsh and Slovaks we will win the group. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The ironic thing is that it was probably the same people who said Rooney shouldn't have started the game. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
For me the reason we switched off is that we went negative and tried defending a 1 nil lead instead of continuing the ay we had played and dominated the entire game. As soon as we sat back and invited pressure a goal was always likely because it is so easy to switch off for a few seconds when you are complacent and passing around at the back retaining possession Barnsley versus Colchester all over again
Best tournament performance since v Holland in '96. Scintilating, attacking and pacy football. Looked solid at the back. Yes, should have scored 4-5 from open play(which counteracts some folks critisisms). Youngest squad in France. Done by a freak header. I for one (90th min excluded) are one happy bunny. Sometimes cant be ar5ed over the years even bothering watching England as its often been stale and benale. This lot certainly are not. Roll on Thursday. As for the sub choices?!? Should have brought on Hindsight, he'd have seen us to 3 points guaranteed.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing but without the benefit of hindsight I think playing Rooney in midfield was a gamble and one that Roy made just to get him in the team.
Would have Vardy for sterling - sterling in for pace but there's no end product - Vardy has pace too and more likely to do something in front of goal
The main problem is Wiltshire is there instead of Drinkwater, winner of the Premier league, player of nearly every gam, tackle and passing machine, v's some wide boy idiot who drinks and smokes and has barely played 2 games back to back all season. A stupid, stupid decision.
I do think we were very unlucky but at the same time it made sense to bring Sturridge or Vardy on to replace Kane as Russia would inevitably attack with more numbers & leave you opportunities to counter them with Sturridge or Vardy's pace
On the OPTA stats he was top on three of them and third on another. That was the level of his control last night. He shouldn't have been taken off. Not as bad as Kane taking corners though.
