George Smith and George Williams leave Oakwell.
Barnsley Football Club can today confirm that George Smith and George Williams have departed Oakwell after the Club decided against offering them new contracts.

Both players’ current deals are due to expire at the end of June and new contracts were initially offered to both players at the end of the 2015/16 Season. However after careful consideration and further discussions between the board and coaching staff, the Club has now decided to withdraw the contract offers to allow both players the opportunity to progress their careers and play regular first team football next Season.

19-year-old George Smith progressed through the Barnsley FC Academy and went on to make 44 appearances for the Reds.

23-year-old George Williams signed from non-league Worcester City in December 2014 and went on to make 27 appearances for the Reds, scoring one goal.

We would like to thank both players for their hard work and commitment throughout their time at the Club and wish them the very best of luck in their future careers.

Confused at this. George W. deserves better. I can only think new signings are imminent.

Got to be more to the Williams one than the club are letting on. Seriously confused by it...

We must have someone lined up to come in for replacements? What fullbacks do we have? Bree? Dolan seems to get good reviews in the academy but dont think he's ready for the championship.

That's crazy. There has to be something to come out about this. Maybe they were told they'll definitely be backup as there's others coming in?

The Williams one is very odd. He's a cracking player.

Had they been given deadlines to sign? Just a thought.

Agree with all the posts above. Real shame about Williams. Great versatility and ran his blood to water every game for the cause. He was also very sound defensively.

Smith struggled in league one. The jump to The Championship would have been too much IMO. I know plenty will disagree with that but I just didn't see 'it' in him.

Very sad about this as I liked both lads & wish them all the best. I'd guess that Yiadom and A.N. Other will be our full backs next season.

Wow! That is just bizarre. Yeah, yeah, in Hecky we trust an' all that, but I think that is a major, major ****-up. Sorry Ben & team - that's an absolute howler.

Eh? This is one of the strangest things I've ever heard, might not be full blown Championship quality but definitely a dependable squad player

Bloody hell, typical Barnsley. Some cracking news with Hammill's extension and then a baffling piece of news less than 24 hours later that barely any of the fanbase will be able to understand.

Two promising young players who seemed like great characters are leaving and I can't think why. Surely their wages wouldn't have been altogether huge even if they were only going to be squad players?

Best of luck to both and I hope they go on to make good careers for themselves as I have every faith they will do. I think this is one that we may come to regret a couple of years down the line.

Have we paid Hammill so much that we can't afford to keep them

We have to remember that football can be brutal when it comes to loyalties and contracts
As I've said in other posts - many of the established players from the promoted team are unlikely to be successful in the Championship
This time next season the squad will look different to what it looks like now

Well, shocked is the only word. Fantastic player in either left or right back brilliant cover if not first choice.

BFC this is a mistake , George Williams was a dependable asset and cheap at that

Some teams gonna get a right player

There's something more to it - see Observer's posts in the Ryan McLaughlin thread.
