Agree that the decision to release Williams is a bit odd but totally understand doubts over Smith making it at championship level. I think one of the issues may be that we want to play with more attacking full backs, such as Yiadom, Bree and White, next season. I do agree that Williams was excellent defensively the second half of last season but don't think he offered a great deal going forward. Could also be due to the fact that they wanted to play first team football and that couldn't be offered in the Championship.
Baffled by Williams being allowed to leave. He was our stand out full-back last season, and can play comfortably on either side. He was apparently well liked within the squad too. Not surprised to see Smith go. Didn't really rate him last season, and definitely couldn't see him making the step up to the Championship.
Wonder if we are planning on going 3 at the back with wingbacks? That's the only reason I can see them not wanting to at least have a look at Williams in the Championship?
As I read it, it's perfectly straightforward. They would probably have stayed had we been in League One. Having gone up they feel that they can sign better players and don't want to potentially damage their careers by having them out of the first team for most of the season, so decided to let them go.
I agree, but I think that's mainly because we've had shocking fullbacks in recent years (e.g. Wiseman, Kennedy, Brown)! Williams was sound defensively and would maybe have been a good squad player next season but always thought bree and white offered a lot more going forward
Except when Williams was dropped inexplicably for Bree, Bree made a right royal **** up of his chance. Gave his worst performance in a Reds shirt. Williams never let us down once and seemed like a major piece of the setup both on and off the field. Am genuinely baffled by this. Sent from my SM-T800 using Tapatalk
As much as i like these two i dont think they will ever be championship footballers. It's a real shame for Williams in particular but essentially he is a right back playing left back....which worked in League 1, but when we come up against some flying wingers he will be caught out. Aidy White is a better left back, and presume he will sign today as result of this. Bree, Yiadom and Scowen are 3 choices we can play right back...so no point carrying another one really, and does he really deserve to be second choice left back. Its a tought call but theres obviously plans in place to replace these two. Hopefully they both get fixed up with league teams sharpish.
Agreed. Had we been in League One, think they'd both have stayed. If we can get a Bree and White fully fit, they're better players than the two Georges. And White has Championship experience, which is vital for us
Not fussed about smith, would like to have seen Williams given a chance. Hope we arnt relying on White playing a full season, he's soft as ****, don't think he's ever been injury free in his career
He did, but you have to remember that Bree is 18 so is likely to make mistakes, similar to what John Stones has experienced at Everton recently. And I still stand by the fact that Bree is more composed on the ball and offers more of a threat going forward. I liked Williams, but not sure he would cut it in league one.
But white is winger by trade and bree was starting to make a lot if mistakes Since he gotback in the side his been fantastic.
I don't have an issue with Bree per se, but folk who point out he is young and has to be allowed mistakes seem unwilling to apply the same logic to Smith. What's good for the goose ........ Sent from my SM-T800 using Tapatalk
I agree that Smith should also be allowed to make mistakes, but I also think Smith isn't half as good and shows much less potential. Hence the reason why I'm happy for him to be released.
Like the guy Marshall at Bradford who was terrorising defences week in week out until George marked him so well that Marshall almost gave up. If he'd had a white flag, Marshall would have hoisted it aloft and surrendered after an hour that night.
