So still unclear about why remainers on here think EU protects workers rights....

...seeing as how zero hours contracts, massive pension changes/cuts and other changes e.g. maternity rights have come into force during EU membership. Secondly the holidays we have here exceed minimum EU requirements as does the minimum Living wage.

Italy had it even worse when they changed the retirement age as they did not phase it in... It was announces then implemented. Teachesr and public sector workers suddenly found themselves having to work several extra years. Yes, Public sector worker pensions are generous but that is, in part, because wages are low. We have a teacher friend here who was near retirement and then was told he had to work another 6 years. As an experienced qualified, chemistry teacher at an agricultural college he earns 13k euros a year!!


I appreciate the argument that Brexit would hail a new era of Right wing policies for the likes of Boris J if Cameron and the present Conservative Govt was ousted but even socialist governments in France are changing employment law and removing protection from workers hence the massive protests (largely unreported by the UK press in the run up to the referendum). Greece population have been royally screwed by a socialist govt who vowed not to bow to EU pressure.


Given all that I still don't see why so many on here think the EU is the saviour of the working man and will protect him for capitalist/right wing excesses.

How do you work that out? Ironically, living in mainland Europe DOES give you a different perspective of UK domestic issues as seen by Europeans. You would be surprised at how little of what goes on in Europe actually makes its way in to the UK press and media.

 

Nothing wrong with asking and keeping the debate open.

If you believe strongly in one side of the debate you should be trying to convince others, it's a more important vote than a general election.

 

As for answering the OP, yes the EU is increasingly influenced by corporations. However, many part-time workers' rights, maternity and other leave rights are enshrined for 500+ million workers across over 20 countries. Leave the EU and you're fighting with what is left of the decimated trade unions in Britain who are actively under attack by govt. Legislation. It took the best part of a century for the labour movement to win most of these rights in the context of a mighty manufacturing industry which formed the bulk of our economy.

So I ask you, would you be more confident of keeping these rights as one of hundreds of millions of European workers , or a few million under a right wing government ?

 

Does the same advice apply to anything posted by those who are voting remain?

Save me the trouble of posting the same. Seems I get accused of posting rhetoric and spewing ill informed nonsense by those who are clearly voting remain. I do post as I passionately believe that Remain have not delivered any facts as every utterance is preceded by "May", "Might", "Could". Most remainer quoted in the media have a vested interest or a financial incentive for pushing remain.

Ironically I was indirectly criticised in this thread (an other times) for living "away" (Italy) so my input somehow is invalid as I am "ill-informed" in spite of reporting on EU and UK being less parochial here.

Other times I am accused of being xenophobic, racist, and a "little Englander" . Strange how remainers on here so often resort to insults when no-one agrees with their viewpoint. And I am called agressive if I retaliate. (I call it passionate although I admit to 'going on a bit' -alright - a lot!)

Anyway, the race is nearly run. besides, they don't have to read my posts if they are that bothered about them.

 

That may be how it looks now...but it's only temporary , the Tories won't be in for ever , Labour will recover , the Tories will become as unelectable as they were from 97-2010....if this vote goes against them they may implode sooner rather than later . The left need to have confidence that they can still fight and win elections.

Happl retired thank you and merely 'working for' as you put it what I believe passionately to be best for UK in the longer term. I may be wrong but no-one can say for certain I am in the same way that I cannot say for certain those voting for remain are. I am posting for those undecided or those who believe everything spouted by Cameron and Osborne is true.

If you have firmly decided to vote remain why don't you simply ignore my posts on the topic rather than responding with insults?

 

Thanks. Nice to have a reasoned response rather than the insults and put downs from some of the remainers on here. (I know I do go on a bit). Contrary to what some believe and post I have no personal aggro against anyone who is voting remain. Disagree with them but, hey ho only the future will determine if the ultimate decision (whatever it is ) was the correct one.

 

I think everyone should be able to express a point of view it's a beautiful thing ( the Ingrid Bergmann of rights) but when you say exactly the same thing in about 300000 ways it becomes more a down market Kerry Ketona of rights.

The EU enshrines rights to employment protections across EU states. While you can dream about tomorrow the brutal truth about the here and now Is that unions cannot defend these rights. The people it will impact the most when the Working time directive is repealed and many rights removed have no one to defend them or speak on their behalf.

 

I haven't been anybody else posting about it daily like he does. It's getting beyond pathetic.

This applies to the debate in general, not just the BBS. It really boils my pi55 when people get called racist for having concerns about immigration. It has been the same on QT, general debates and lots of other clips I have seen on YouTube.

 

No mate. What is pathetic if it bothers you why do you feel obliged to read them, never mind comment. People are posting stuff every day and mine tend to relate to specific events of the day like GO's pathetic empty threat today (which I haven't posted about) .

Just ignore them if it bothers you that much.
