Makes a lot of sense and shows(if you're right) that Hecky is made of the right stuff(allowing a young player to leave on a free to help him find another club, rather than just treating him like a commodity).

Im sure i speak for the vast majority of Tarn fans when i say thanks for his contribution to the one of the most remarkable season in recent memory, and all the best for the future. I shall certainly be following his career closely from now on.

Also, Observer, please dont be a stranger on here and keep us up to date with how the lads career is going!

I can't believe we have let him go. My sons been asking me almost everyday if he's signed yet. Was gutted today when I said he was leaving.

Sure he won't have a prob getting a new team. There was a thread on the blades forum with in minutes of the announcement saying they should sign him.

    Good luck George

Well please pass on my and (I would hope) every other Barnsley fans best wishes to George.
He's been a massive credit to himself (and his upbringing ;) ) and it's been a pleasure to watch him develop.
I'd have hoped that he would get a chance to prove himself next year , but who knows he might be playing against us in the Champ soon.
Hope he gets a good club , he deserves it.

Thanks Observer for the words. I'm really sad to see George go. I really loved his performances and wanted him to stay for a good few years. I can't see him having any problems with a high end League 1 club. Wish him all the best. He will be missed.

Thanks Observer. Brilliant explainer and useful reminder that these situations are usually a bit more complex than one side being right and the other side being wrong.

If Barnsley were only offering a back up role next year then George has done exactly the right thing. Having arrived on the professional scene late and making so much progress he's right to want to be a first teamer wherever he is, and showed last year that's absolutely where he should be.

From a Barnsley perspective I guess time will tell. We've certainly got a good talent in James Bree to step in, and may have others in the pipeline.

From a personal perspective I'm the same as many others here. Absolutely gutted, he was a top player for us but backed it up with being a first rate professional on and off the pitch. It always sticks in my mind when he was dropped against Chesterfield for Bree to come back - most players would have sulked but George ran out to take his place on the bench and high fived all the youngsters lining up with the flags. Small things like that are a real indication of being a first rate human being - and he backed that up with amazing performances on the pitch.

All the best for the future George. You really deserve it.

Just please don't go to Sheff United OK?

Everyone on here is gutted George has gone as you can tell by reading the comments. He always gave 100% in a red shirt and I have no doubt he will find a club league one or higher with a promotion and jpt on his cv. Sad to see him go will always get a warm welcome back at oakwell. Also his goal against peterbough is one I won't forget for many years if ever.

To be fair if I were 'back up' to White and Bree given their respective injury records I'd expect to play 40 plus games...

Good luck to George. Disappointed to see him go but can understand why. Thought he was a real bright light when he got his chance and never let us down. Good luck in finding a new club and you'll always get my appreciation when you return to Oakwell

Gutted George is leaving. Met him a couple of times and he came across as a very decent, level headed, intelligent guy who I enjoyed chatting to. You should be as proud of him for that as for his football. I can say no more about him than I was going to have 'Williams 22' on my new shirt. Good luck!

My favourite goal this season wasn't either of Hammill's at Wembley, it wasn't Winnall's v Walsall, it was your George's against Peterborough. Not just because Posh are a set of cnuts, or because it was utterly vital to us making the playoffs, but because you could see how much it meant to him, and it capped a remarkable turnaround in his season.

Deep down all us supporters wish we were good enough to play for Barnsley and most of us feel slightly alienated from the modern game. So when we see someone who, rather than being a pro footballer from 16, went to uni then worked his way up from non league to playing for Tarn, it lets us dream that we've still got a chance. It reminds us that there is still some romance left in the game. Especially when that player goes absolutely ******* mental after scoring like it's the champions league final rather than a Tuesday night game against Peterborough.

In an age of overpaid primadonnas it's refreshing to see someone who puts the hard graft in, and has real passion. I'm gutted to see George go, but I wish him well wherever he ends up next - even if it's Sheff United.

    What a great explanation.Thank you.

George is a fantastic player that came across 100% committed ,my son and myself met the players including George twice this season and he is as nice a person off the field as he is good as a player on.

In my opinion I think BFC have got this one wrong ,best full back we've had for a while . Good luck to George and he will have no problem finding a club .

A sad day I feel for Barnsley supporters

Wish George all the best from me. He's obviously a very intelligent lad judging by his interviews. I was absolutely gutted to hear the news this afternoon because he is genuinely my favourite player.

I hope he goes on to play at least at Championship level because he throughly deserves it. His story is quite a special one with the way he's got into the game

All the best to you and your family in the future. I knew you were George's dad after you'd mentioned seeing him play at Barrow.

You should be very proud of George. I've made my feelings quite clear. He was my favourite player and the most remarkable story out of them all last year for me. Stepping up like he was made for professional football.

He should walk into any top L1 team. And I have utter belief he will be in the championship before long. Just a shame it's not with us.

Although I'm concerned that in a message the other day you implied a few out of Mawson, Roberts, Hourihane and Winnall wouldn't be here next year. Sincerely hope that was your opinion and not inside info!!

Hi Observer, I sat with young George at the awards dinner and he is credit to you. He wasn't sure then if he would be offerred a contract but we all thought he'd done enough to get one. He reminded me of what I was like at his age. I didn't fully appreciate table ettiquette and which plate, glass etc was whose either. He is a Smashing lad and I hope he finds a club soon.

Walsall forum also casting an admiring eye as they expect Demetriou to leave. They can't believe we've let him go. Would be a good fit I reckon.

Not much to add to posts above but good luck to both George and his dad for the future and thanks for the amazing memories of your 'George of the Rovers' rise, committed, no-nonsense defending and overall immense contribution to this fantastic season.

A proper laiker like what they used to be.
