After the referendum.............

Assuming it's a 'leave' vote, there will be a fascinating and chaotic period in politics. The Brexiters have indicated what laws they would pass and what other measures they might take. But it requires a big leap to get from the leave vote to Boris & Co actually forming a government. Cameron might stand down - he will certainly be totally discredited. But then he might just stay on to conduct the 'exit' negotiations, and maybe to slowtime our departure in the hope that something will turn up.

What I can easily imagine is that immediately after a leave vote, the EU top brass would hastily convene to cobble together further concessions with a request to put the new deal to the electorate again. I recall that similar tactics were employed in respect of some countries regarding the ultimately ill-fated new EU constitution.

If it's a 'remain' vote then I would imagine it will only be by a slim margin. The divisions in the Tory Party would if anything worsen, and the clamour of Farrage and his ilk would not go away.

All in all, I could see next Thursday being only the beginning. What fun!

Even a modest remain win will see Cameron toppled. Much of this vote has been to engineer leadership change.

Whatever happens, we're likely to face the most right wing government for a long time. Boris' tenure as London Mayor was disastrous. I cant imagine what damage he could do to the country if he somehow incredibly got the PM job by default.

 

Which ever way it goes the Tories will be in meltdown , can see a General Election within 6 months . If it's leave Cameron and Osbourne are finished , if it's remain the Tory brexits will make passing any legislation impossible . I think it will be like the Scotish referendum all panic about a leave vote but a comfortable remain vote

I hope you're right about a "Remain" victory. I retire on 30 June and a "Leave" vote will dramatically reduce my pension savings because of stock markets falling and the value of the£ reducing by 10 - 20%.

 

If Leave wins, Boris will oust Cameron, Gove will become his Chancellor and Farage will join the Tories and get himself a nice job in the Cabinet. Good luck when that happens.

 

Cameron will be the victim of his own downfall, putting the country in danger by offering a referendum just to win another term in power.
