Life is unpredictable. We have made a monumental decision. It is up to us now to make it work. It may turn out to be a monumental 'fu*k-up' or it may be the best thing we did. On an individual basis we must all have made major decisions in life where we are unsure how it will turn out. That is part of living. NO smugness from me, I am just as nervous as others as to what the future holds but isn't the unknown just a little bit exciting?? Go on admit it! perhaps it is me, I have often taken risks like upping and moving here for example, It was, and as an ex-pat, for me, a big risk voting out

We CAN make it work. It IS a step into the unknown, but if the Remainers start with the idea that the country is fu*ked like on or two on here are already saying then it will be a self-fullifilling prophecy.

It wont be easy, there WILL be problems especially in the short term but if we come over 'all corporal Fraser' then we will be screwed

We CAN make it work. WE as a nation have overcome greater odds than this. I can state as a fact, many ordinary Italians are celebrating today. It is the elite that are crapp*ng themselves in the corridors of power. Britain is not as isolated now as many people think.

Fu*k Cameron, Farage, Gove and all the people that have pushed ordinary people to make this high risk decision and as a people come together to do what has to be done. Lets not have recriminations and points scoring. I unashamedly pinch the remain slogan here. BETTER TOGETHER!!

You are right we have to try to make this work.

But that is going to be so difficult. Whatever the outcome had been, we are now a totally divided nation. Half the country and most of the rest of the world think the rest of the population are stupid at best and or small minded, inward looking bigots. Not a healthy state to be in.
The only bit of the UK that is really successful in global terms, embraces the world is modern, open minded and full of people from every corn of the earth, is London. The capital is now isolated from the rest of England by voting remain. But note Oxford and Cambridge also world leading cities also voted remain.

I am always one to roll up my selves and try and make things work. But shortly I will be running a university outside Europe. I would love to be able to collaborate with friends here in the UK. But I simply cannot. Britain in now a tiny player and I cannot afford to align my organisation with a nation in crisis. UK has no funds or mechanisms in place to work with me or indeed almost anywhere else.

That's exactly how I feel too. I voted to leave because in the long term, I feel that is the right path for the country. It won't be an easy path but nothing worthwhile ever is. When I got up a 5am this morning to see where things were going, I fully expected to see Remain ahead by a small margin, and instead I found that the result was as good as confirmed for leave, and my initial reaction was GULP!. I am nervous about the immediate future, but it's a bit exciting at the same time.

The thing that satisfies me the most is the fact that democracy has had a good day today. Despite all the predictions of Armageddon and the collapse of the modern world, people have not been cowed by the threats and have voted with their heart.

York voted to remain too. That at least gives me personally some comfort

I'm happy that Leeds, Harrogate and York voted remain. At least I can look at that section of map and feel a little happier.

Really - in a campaign that was dominated by lies on all sides, misinformation, ignorance and intolerance of people with different views.

I repeat - whatever the outcome was, this exercise has been very damaging for the UK. We are no longer a united kingdom, but a deeply and dangerously divided one.

WE are going to be able to do **** all. We are just the pawns here. You are going to do even less if you are staying in Italy. As for the elite 'crapping themselves', if they are worried what should we be feeling? If the rich are about to get poorer then you can bet your life that the poorer are going to be even worse. I've seen a lot of people saying 'rich people are voting in so I'm voting out' as if as the money falls out of their pockets it's going to roll down the street and jump into theirs.

Yep totally. Already this week a number of our partners have been pulling out of dealing with science collaborations with my current university.

Science is a multi-national thing, it is far too expensive to go it alone.
You have to be part of multi-nation collaborations. and the UK has voted to be outside the mechanism set up to make that happen.

The UK is no longer part of funding schemes I can apply for. And does not have enough money or expertise to be worth the effort, when there are big fish out there.

I appreciate that may well be a strong factor in science.
Our own money market (financial market) is a massive institution and WE the Uk are a major player, in this region we are not tiny in this respect.
The inevitable crumbling of the European union has started...expect others to follow. we have merely started the process.
There will of course be winners and losers but the thing just didn't work.
I feel sorry that your chosen profession may be effected massively. Lets just see,
Far too many people have spun lies about what the outcomes would be.

Thank God half the people on here weren't around when we declared war on Germany. Most of us would either not be here or speaking German

The woprld is still spinning, people will still need food clothes cars housing. Countries like Germany will still want to trade with us. The markets WLL recover.

If all you seek is negatives that is what you wll find. Don't go all 'Corporal Frazier' What can you do in the UK that I can't do in Italy anyway. I stll have a vote for example.

The point about making decisions and taking risks Tekktyke is that you should be able to know what the likely benefits are and also the likely dangers. I do that every time I place a bet on a horse. Both those things are uncertain in this situation, but we're talking here not about bets on horses but about people's lives - their jobs, mortgages and pensions. You ought to be a lot more certain about the above factors before you tinker with those things. That's the madness of all this to me. But fair do's, those who disagree have won the day.

Very condescending ....obviously the working class should be denied a vote until you have educated them from your ivory tower .

I feel like (just over) half of these people were around when we declared war in Germany - in Germany!

I can't do anything in the UK, that's my point so I don't know why you keep on with the 'WE' can do this rubbish. We can do a big fat nowt.
