with the brexit this week ( in or out your choice not bothered) people are on about migrants coming over here and pinching our jobs. now do you think that an influx of foreign players into ( mainly) the premiership is effecting the standard of English players because they're not getting game time so cant improve and are being pushed out on loan to lower league clubs or will it improve their game because they are playing with a higher standard of player, I have no agenda apart from feeling ashamed of the p1sspoor performance last night

 

I don't think it will make a difference either way, I reckon getting a visa will be as easy as blinking for football players so we'll still have plenty of foreign players.

 

Don't non-European players have to reach a certain standard before they are allowed to come i.e. international representation of some kind? Maybe it will keep out some of the dross that we've never heard of and allow English players to take their place.

 

that's the point you can fetch a "messi" in while a "vardy" is released and goes to Halifax, would he have been at the standard he is now at 21 and if so how good would he be now (29). its not the visa its the fact that we are in essence paying to improve another countries players, bit like the loan system but with no gain for the national side...................... or is that racist, bit of topical humour there for you

 

Non eu players do have to cover some kind of criteria.

But we have so much dross from Europe as well.

And the price of players are simply out of reach. So eu players are bought even more.

A very interesting question. But I don’t think it’s really the issue. As we know from this last season, a group of players can go from rock bottom to world beaters. OK there were other things involved as well. But the really significant change was in mental state, guts, work ethic and self-belief. And that’s the problem with the English team. It’s also why Iceland who on paper are much less strong as individuals won as a team last night. It’s all in the head.
Is mental state effected by having more overseas players in our leagues? I don’t think so.
I think this is an English problem.

 

how many, if any, I don't know, overseas players were in the Leicester team last season. and I kind of agree with you about the "well we've only got to turn up attitude"

 

its all about attitude, mindset and the will to win imo. how often do we see premier league teams actually busting a gut and running till they cant run no more? once in a lifetime last year with Leicester maybe?. Normally teams win premier league games and the league because they've got better footballers than the others.

England should have won last night, primarily because we've got better footballers. The collective will of Iceland however meant skill was less of a factor, the longer the game went on the Iceland team grew into 10 foot giants it seemed in front of our week and feble set in individuals.

that must be due to initially trying harder than we were , to compensate for a skill deficiancy and them mental attitude. It was pretty obvious from before half time we were not going to win.

 

Say what you like about the Lampard, Gerrard, Beckham et al generation, at least they busted a gut and looked like they gave a stuff - even if it didn't turn out to be the golden generation people wanted/expected.

The Italian National Team was supposed to be in crisis before this competition, yet they have played very well. Apparently, only 30% of Serie A players are Italian, that figure is similar to one quoted this morning for the Premier League.

I do wonder about the number of matches we play though. The English team looked knackered against Iceland. No doubt they will all be heading off on lucrative pre-season trips in a couple of weeks.

 

This true but it isn't the whole problem IMO. We had a long period of international football before the premier league began and besides from one blip in 1966 we have been perennial failures in international football. The influx of foreign players do make our players look better than they are and the telephone number salaries don't help matters but in truth we just don't produce players that are good enough.
