Great post this. The one thing I'll disagree on is the performance in Brazil. At least then we were up against genuinely decent sides in Uruguay & Italy & then you'd Costa Rica who turned out to be decent no doubt helped by the climate but this tournament we were up against dross with the exception of Wales.

I just can't believe we couldn't break down the likes of Iceland, Slovakia & Russia. It was crying out for width which we didn't have.

Sturridge wasn't great my any means but when I looked at all our chances since his introduction in the Wales game he created every one except the Henderson long ball to Vardy.

In that time Rooney & Alli didn't create a chance between them, Kane didn't either. Dreadful.

The Henderson decision was ridiculous, it's not like you can say 'well he's quality so he's worth gambling on' like you could argue with Wilshere. He's bang average & coming off a long time out injured. Leave him home

Lets be right here, the 'Welsh' players arnt good enough to play for England and never would have been, obvious exception of Ramsey and Bale of course but they are actually Welsh anyway. They are a team thats riding momentum and havent exactly been brilliant this tournament have they? They'll probably not even qualify for the WC so lets stop bigging them up like theyre Brazil of 70 of something.

I'm sorry but going back 10 years we had the best international squad ever assembled, individually, so how have we had unrealistic expectations?

    Best international squad ever assembled?

    You've proved my point there.

Gary Neville, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Wayne Rooney. All world class at the time. No question it was the best international side ever assembled. Shame we continually appoint retards as managers.

    No question? Gioer.

Barthez; Thuram, Lizerazu, Blanc, Desailly; Deschamps, Vieira; Henry, Zidane, Djourkaeff; Trezeguet

Casillas, Arbeloa, Pique, Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba, Xavi Hernandez, Busquets, Alonso, Iniesta, Fabregas, Silva

2 teams off the top of my head that are way better and they're just from my time watching football. I can't speak for Brazil 1970 nor the total football Holland team of the 70s, but I have a sneaking suspicion they just might have been slightly better than the England team that did fvck all.

I dont think you can underestimate the psychological blow of conceding that injury time equaliser v Russia. We'd played really well without scoring - then Dier made the breakthrough - dont forget we've never won the opening game at a Euro's before - that would have been a massive boost for our young team. Then after the massive boost of winning the Wales game Hodgson decides to risk winning the group by making wholesale changes when we should have been gathering momentum! Then finally we make the start everyone prayed for v Iceland only to concede to a long throw less than a minute later. Add to that the terrible form of possibly our 2 most important players - our goalkeeper and our centre forward and the tournament ended up turning into a disaster. Hodgson made so many mistakes which is really unforgivable with it being his 3rd tournament - its such a shame as this Euro's was wide open for actually making some progress for once.
