It seems to me that the objectives of the centre right Labour MP's and the hard left/union wing of the party are utterly irreconcilable. Corbyn won't give in because of his membership mandate. The PLP won't give in because they think he is useless and he doesn't have their confidence. I found Eagle uninspiring this morning with Andrew Neil and I struggle to see that she would hold any more attraction for the members than Burnham, Cooper, et al. If she wins, the hard left won't fall in behind her. If Corbyn wins then the centrist MP's won't fall in behind him. So they want different things. A split should happen in those circumstances, in my opinion. Of course neither faction would be able to defeat the Tories. But at least they'd both have ideological purity. Yay!

 

I decided to look at Jeremy Corbyn's Wikipedia entry this morning, just to find out what he actually believes in. He is 67 years of age. It turns out that he went to a Grammar School (spits out the taste from his mouth) and got two A levels, both E grade. He then went to a Polytech, which he left without a degree after a disagreement about the course curriculum. He went into politics via union activity and has the record for voting against the party whip. His answer to almost everything is negotiation, disarmament and committees/focus groups. Leadership and decision making are not words with which he is well acquainted.

But the high spot for me was the following:

In 1987, Corbyn married Chilean exile Claudia Bracchitta, granddaughter of Ricardo Bracchitta (Cónsul General de España en Santiago) and niece of Dr Óscar Soto Guzman, by whom he has three sons. Following a difference of opinion about sending their son to a grammar school – Corbyn opposes selective education – they divorced in 1999, although Corbyn said in June 2015 that he continues to "get on very well" with his former wife. His son subsequently attended Queen Elizabeth's School, which was his wife's first choice.

There was a failure to agree and diplomatic relations broke down. The wife issued a vote of no confidence in his leadership. This led to Corbyn's resignation, and the party split up. The party carried on without him and his resignation made no difference to the eventual outcome. Are there any indications at all about the future here?

 

The problem is the excuse about needing to be a centrist party to win a general election doesn't hold anymore. As Labour pursued a broader appeal that appeal became shallower. They've lost previous strongholds in Scotland and Wales and they can't win a majority at the next election without them. Under any leadership. They need to reach out to the parties of the left and form progressive alliances against the Tories, as the almost always right Caroline Lucas points out (what would the PLP give for her to be an option right now). But a lurch to the right instantly rules that out.

 

All three of Jeremy Corbyns sons have taken an active part in supporting their father. And the son involved in the education row has previously spoken out against private education.

 

If only we had an electoral system that reflected this plurality of political views.

 

But as I think you'll acknowledge, the main parties (when in power) never want to agree to this. See Coalition refendum on PR - admittedly watered down version, but defeated by about 5:1.

He is opposed to the renewal of Trident, but Wikipedia records that Corbyn believes that the nuclear submarines could be sent to sea without their ballistic missiles.

If negotiations fail with Herr Hitler, we shall be forced to face his army on the field of battle. The British army has been issued with guns, and we may provide them with ammunition as a last resort.

 

But he didn't say without weapons did he ?
He said without nuclear weapons.

 

Let us get this clear. Trident is our only defence against a nuclear strike. Because their whereabouts is not known, the Trident submarines would be able to launch a counter strike guaranteeing mutually assured destruction.

Trident gets us a seat at the table when the big boys decide how the world will be. No Trident - No Voice.

Now you may well say that we do not need to be able to sit down with the big boys. You may argue that it is not necessary on the basis that German does not have a seat. But Germany is on the front line, and because of that it is under the protective wing of the USA. Britain is different. Do we really want to be pushed around by countries that we currently regard as second class?
