Defensive Midfielder next hopefully

I think Winnall and Fletcher was our best partnership.

For me Fletcher was by far our best all round striker. Brilliant player who was still getting better when the season finished.

Fletcher was blossoming and becoming a great player who I loved and has attributes to play at the highest level if they continue to be developed but Watkins and Winnall as a duo was in my opinion the best fit for each other and undeniably productive.

We always seem to boil things down to binary choices on the BBS. Thankfully Hecky built a squad last year with a number of positive options and looks to be on the way to doing the same now for the new season.

 

Just had a quick Twitter conversation with my mate Si who works in a very minor capacity for Leicester I asked him what formation they generally play. He said a fluid 4-4-2. Maybe I should show him some stats to convince him otherwise.

 

To be fair Lee Johnson built it.

Hecky developed and improved it.

Same here but doubt we will get anyone of note/experience as nobody will want to sit bench warming whilst Roberts/Mawson play week in week out. Cowgill for this reason could be seeing more gametime next season, especially with Nyatanga seemingly off.

Yeah that's the thing. Hopefully we'll find someone in League One in the same mould of all our signings. If not, a Premier League loan

Don't know if you've missed Heckinbottom's interviews but the plan is to play 4-4-2.

I'd like another central midfielder but in terms of defensive midfielders that is Josh Scowen's best position, he played there all his career before joining us & even says in interviews he plays better in that position.

 

Doubt we'll sign another central midfielder. Hecky said yet again he plans on playing 4-4-2 which means Lee and Moncur are seen as midfielders. With CH plus Scowen doubt we'll sign anyone else.

Agreed, I yearn for the good old days when midfielders were just midfielders.

 

Agree with HT. Brownhill going leaves us deficient in midfield . Not convinced (as much as I rate him) that Scowen has the discipline to sit in - esp against the better quality teams we'll be up against.
We seem to have signed plenty attack minded options but not much defensively.

I see Scowen as more of a Perkins if anything, with more natural attacking ability. I'd deem him an attack minded midfielder, not a holding/defensive one. So I'd agree with you there, and HT.

But Brownhill wasn't a defensive midfielder, not when he arrived. And whilst he did sit in during games, so did Conor. They took turns at it. Walsall away in the league and playoffs, Brownhill was the one licensed to get forward more while Conor held back. In others, Wigan away, dem blades away just two recent examples, Conor was doing more of the forward work with Brownhill sat back. And at times, both were getting forward, and both sat in. It was a classical 4-4-2. I enjoyed seeing it. I thought Brownhill was immense and LJ has got himself a proper player there.

Can Moncur become that sort of midfielder? Could Harris?

I'm like you, I don't see Scowen thriving in that role. So maybe, just maybe we do need another one in there? But I stand by what I said initially, I don't think we need a holding/defensive midfielder. I'd like another Brownhill, but I have hopes that Moncur will emulate him.

Interesting times.

 

Interesting as you say - hold my hands up and say I know zero about our new signings so far - it's just I think Brownhill was a massive part of our progress last year. If the new lads can emulate him then happy days.

I was a big fan of Brownhill. He did a lot you didn't notice but then when you watched the highlights back there he was blocking, clearing. For one of our first goals a at Wigan he put in an immense tackle on the edge of our box to set us up.
If Hecky can get Moncur doing that on top of his attacking game I'll be delighted.

 

He was massive, him replacing Pearson was huge I think. More athletic, more to his game.

I've only seen a glorified fitness session at Guiseley but Moncur and Harris were impressive. Neither looked soft and blatantly unable to play in a two. Albeit against Brad Abbott...

Whereas Scowen came on and ratted around like he does. Effectively like. But as you said, not sure he could sit in when needed, discipline needed for that.

 

Josh Scowen should never be pigeon holed into a defensive midfielder.

He has a great burst of speed and very quick feet. He bursts into the box very well. He can finish too.

I never see Josh Scowen just sitting in. He's certainly not a holding player. He hasn't shown the passing range.

He's all action. Box to box. Yes he gets stuck in and he loves a tackle.

But he isn't a defensive midfielder. He would be stifled as his natural game is to get on every ball. Whether that be in attacking or defensive positions.
