GK: Davies, Townsend, Walton RB: Yiadom, Bree, Kebbie RCB: Roberts, Cowgill LCB: Mawson, Nyatnanga LB: White, Evans RM: Watkins, Williams, Mottley-Henry RCM: Moncur, Scowen, Harris LCM: Hourihane, Kay, LW: Hammill, Templeton RS: Bradshaw, Payne, Jackson, Ash LS: Winnall, Lee, Tuton, Other: Pedro Caneiro, Rhys Dolan, Jeff McGowan Rumoured: Ryan Kent (wing), Jinty Caenepeel (wing) Shaping up nicely... Great to see so much competition in attack. But IMHO we still need a centre half, defensive mid, winger and possibly a keeper.
We do not have any cover at LB, totally unproven RBs, no cover at CB, no cover at RM, no cover at LW or LCM and the worst second choice 'keeper we've ever had with the possible exception of Preece. I keep reading that the squad is coming together nicely or we've got the best squad we've ever had but to me it looks like in the majority of positions, if we have one injury we're in trouble. At some point this season White will be injured, so Evans comes in. A lad who will be 21 in October and has never played a competitive game in his life yet we're hoping he can do a job for us. In the championship. Bonkers. I was going to start a thread about this but it would be a waste of time. Debate is not possible on this board as we're currently having to praise the club for every decision it makes and everything it does.
Surely debate is about you making your point and explaining it using reasoned argument. The another poster makes their point and explains it using reasoned argument, and then other posters join in and explain their points, again using reasoned argument. When someone ends their opening post with, "Debate is not possible on this board as we're currently having to praise the club for every decision it makes and everything it does", it really puts a dampener upon the process of debate. I happen to agree. I think that our team is nowhere near as good as everyone is making out. But most people are excited, they had a thrilling end to last season and are anxious to see it continue into the next. It is nothing to do with the level of debate, but it has a lot to do with supporting their team and being enthused for the new season. Why not just calm down, reflect upon the points that you wish to make and try to make them with supporting evidence and without trying to antagonise others. Then we might all enjoy the debate and the to and fro of the arguments that you make.
Agree largely. We only have a small number of players proven at this level & many not proven at the level below. That doesn't mean they won't do well, but I'm pretty sure an experienced CB will come in, a holding midfielder & maybe more cover at full back, unless they are thinking of using Scowen as cover.
Agree with that, Payne does seem to be the one that has been picked out in previous interviews with Hecky and Mansford as having the potential to be in or around the first team. Big step up though, and his opportunities seem more limited now we've signed Bradshaw. Would say he's our 4th choice striker now and wouldn't be surprised if we still went in for someone else in the Fletcher mould, which would put him further down the pecking order.
We need another full back or two, ideally that can play both sides. We need another centre back. Another central midfielder would be ideal If we sign Kent and Caenepeel we'll have more than enough wingers, so then we'll need 3-4 players and we'll be sorted Some of the players on the above list, such as Kay, Kebbie, Mottley-Henry etc. won't be involved in the first team; they're development players. We've probably got around 24 players in the first team squad at the moment
Personally, I'm very pleased with our recruitment so far this Summer. However, I think we still need to strengthen the squad size. It could well be that the coaching staff feel the less experienced players are capable of stepping up to the plate when called upon. But we're still a bit away from the start of the season to be unduly concerned. Also, most clubs will still be recruiting up to the end of the transfer window on 31st August and I believe we'll be amongst that number.
I'm not trying to antagonise anyone. I'm as excited as the next man about being back in the Championship. What the club achieved between January and May has earnt them some well deserved goodwill, but people seem to be going out of their way to give praise for the sake of it. Someone posted recently that Shaun Tuton will be a good player in the Championship. I'm 99.9% certain that he won't. Same with Jackson - he's a striker with a one in nine strike rate in the fifth tier. I can't see him cutting it at this level, but to dare to point these things out and it's the same old from the same people. Sums it up really when we get a thread saying we've got a better squad than the promotion side of 1996/7.
You are absolutely right to point our how weak our squad looks for depth. You are wrong on what I quoted though because you fail to mention them saying "on paper". We all know how good those players turned out to be. But the excitement/expectation level for next is higher from us knowing what guys like Bradshaw/Moncur are capable of, than it was back then hoping that our unknowns would turn out to be good.
I was referring to Barnsley Loyal to be honest, but this squad is not better on paper or on grass. The only place it might be better is dreamland. The only player we have now who would get into that team is Hammill. People are getting carried away.
I dont think the transfer lunacy has got going yet and as such I think we will have to wait and see what a lot of other clubs are doing before we do more business - especially when it comes to getting players with experience. Every reason to be pleased with current business and patient with forthcoming business.
This, 100%. I'd imagine most people are there or thereabouts as well, despite the fringes on both sides labelling everyone else on the board as happy clappers or moaners. Decent squad so far, good additions made, more to do. That's it. We're only halfway through July! Still think we shouldn't have let Williams go though.
I agree that the squad is far from complete, but I do not want to join in the moaning because: 1. I have not had the chance to see the new squad live yet, especially in competitive games against Championship squads. 2. I do not believe that we have finished shopping yet, and improvements will be made in the first choice 18. 3. Premiership teams have not yet released the players that will not be required for their first team squads. Many players have not yet returned from the Euros, and until they do, many players who will be going out on loan are being retained for training and practice reasons. The players released on loan so far are those we really should not be interested in, because they will not be at Championship level. We should and will be interested when the next level of players are released for loan and I hope that we take our full entitlement. Patience Grasshopper!
