FULL TIME: Cheltenham Town 1-3 Barnsley. A commanding performance by the Reds and a fourth straight pre-season win!

I was there on that freezing night at Whaddon Road when they were frightened of our superior strike force - Dyer and Sheron!

    758 there tonight.

hey prince, that was a massive come from behind 1-3 win for us on the night at Cheltenham in 2002-03 wasnt it.
we had another relegation scrap in the first season back down in what is now Lg One. but this doesnt bring back any good memories does it.

The home fixture with them was a big shock. It was our first home game of the season if I remember rightly and, being local, I naturally hopped on one of their supporters buses to go up to Oakwell for the midweek fixture. It was a real experience for the Cheltenham fans - going all the way up north to play one of the BIG teams in a proper football stadium. Listening to the bus chatter they were just going for the experience but how different it was going back! A 1-1 draw was like a cup final win for them, and a crushing disappointment for us.

By the time we went to Whaddon Road things had improved a bit and the local paper was very complimentary about our team before the match, admiring our star strikers especially. 3-1 was a a fair result and I was at the Whaddon Road end with two other local fans, with their GLOUCESTER REDS flag hanging proudly on the back fence.

Wish I could have gone tonight, just for the nostalgia, but it's too far for a friendly.

I travelled down tonight, and we played well overall. Took a little while to get going in the first half perhaps, and we looked far less solid at the back once 3 of the original back 4 had been replaced, but it was a decent game and one from which we can only take positives. Hammill looked skilful as always, and Watkins played especially well in my opinion, making lots of good runs. Davies deserves a mention, marshalling his defence excellently and really commanding control of his box.

In case any of you are interested, there were 60ish reds fans there. I counted 55 at half time but I'm sure I missed a couple due to some being in the toilet/walking around. A good effort I think, and those who were there were certainly rewarded with 3 good Barnsley goals. :)

remember there was also a 0-1 win at Mansfield near the end of that season thanks to a Brian o'callaghan goal. and who can forget isiah rankin's 1-0 winner against Bretford in the last home game. that season doesnt bring back any good memories but its always good to hear 'away' fans and reporters say good and positive things about us when we're playing them.
