Interesting to learn how poorly paid people in South Yorkshire are compared to the national average.

The economist on the BBC said the answer was to work harder so the businesses could make bigger profits and pay better wages.
More like pay the managers, directors and shareholders more.

So if you are one of the people working in South Yorkshire you know you can earn more by simple working harder. Get grafting your lazy so and so's and improve your lot.

So it has got nothing to do with Thatcher closing down our industries and them being replaced with poorly paid call centre and warehouse jobs.

    I'll bite then........................

Work harder to make more profit for the company............... that ensures a pay rise - no I thought not

Making (excessive) profits guarantees errrrrrrrrrrrrr bigger profits

I have always been a great supporter of the BBC, but in the last few years a political bias clearly developed in favour of the Tory Party.
I wonder if this is because they are scared silly that half of the Tory Party want to sell it off.

What about learning new skills? The opportunities are there if you actually want to make a difference to your own life. Failing that's lets moan about the fact we don't have a job for life.

Definitely, but we aren't creating the right sorts of jobs for people, especially in the north.
It costs money too to retrain & often relocate. Not easy for people with families.

It's fun of Tory journalists. Even the ones that aren't have no clue about real life. Interviews with ordinary folk are like watching extrepid explorers trying to communicate with a lost civilisation.

The Mrs and I average just over a hundred hours a week between us and we're far from comfortable. She works in the health service and I'm a tradesman, I wonder how much harder they'd expect us to work?

Close enough. Now I'm no racist but it's not right what they're doing leaving able bodied young men from here out of work because they will work for nowt to send it back home. They'll live in houses with 10 to a house and just save. Tell me how we're supposed to compete.

Tell me how many immigrants do the job that I do in this country for less than my wages. PS if they are doing then they're working illegally.

Work is out there for people if they're prepared to put a shift in and actually do some work and all this ******** about immigrants doing it for less is exactly that, ********

My favourite one is when people say that the likes of ASOS will not employ foreigners. That's absolute crap. apart from the fact that a lot of English folk work there there's the other simple fact that they employ a lot of extra foreigners because a lot of British lazy benefit scroungers simply don't want work and they need to satisfy the demand somehow.

A lot doesn't mean the majority. And benefit scroungers means those who have no intention to work, not the many who are genuinely struggling to find work for one reason or another.

Those folk who are sending money back home. You are seriously contradicting yourself. First you say they are working for half the money that 'we' are willing to yet they are earning so much that they are able to live here and save save save plus send money home. So they are earning a fortune to save loads and end it home but they are working for next to nothing.

Maybe we should be learning how to manage our finances better

It's not the minimum wage jobs that's getting devalued though is it ,?
Mind you if they could get away with it they would.
Zero hour contracts is one way they are trying.
It's the slightly above minimum wage that's suffering and the bosses are actually getting everyone to believe it's the fault of johnny foreigner and not them .
Notice they are entrenching the top board jobs ,some of these contracts are almost untouchable choose whatever their performances .

Sorry I ignored the ******** parts of your story. Do you realise how tiny the amount of people who live in Barnsley with 10 in a small house is?
Or are you just going off hearsay?

Still one benefit of leaving the EU is we will be able to scrap that silly working time directive and you can work lots more hours (irony before anyone bites)

The racist overtones in this thread annoy me. Most of the employment issues in the North are down to the policies of successive BRITISH governments. To blame the EU or foreign workers is bizarre

Mark Thomas made a good point yesterday about how the likes of Philip Green and Mike Ashley - good british businessmen do a lot more damage to british workers than any foreign workers possibly could - they and their likes are the ones that really damage the jobs and pay of British workers - not immigrants from Europe, and not lazy people in the north of England either

It's always the same - blame the poor and state they are poor because they don't work hard enough.
There are people working 2 or 3 minimum wage jobs just to make ends meet - how are they not working hard enough?

Where are these houses with 10 people in, paying 1 rent? Have you been reading The Daily Express and Britain First posts?

Mr Bosch head of the electrics company once said "I don't pay good wages because I have a lot of money, I have a lot of money because I pay good wages".
