A back up goalkeeper. Townsend did very well against Posh and I'm willing to give him a chance. Clearly a good shot-stopper but I still think a year in the U21s or out on loan will be best for him. A 33+ year old might be good for experience in the dressing room. Will no doubt be a young keeper on loan. A back up CB. Looks like one will be incoming very shortly. Nyatanga should be culled by the end of August. A back up LB: Again, looks like one will be incoming very shortly. I'd be surprised if White played over 20 games with his injury proneness. Evans untested. A CDM. Sessi will probably sign. Will give us that extra bit of versatility & Depth. A big target man striker. Would be very useful I reckon. Someone who can give us the option of playing direct football and makes us more of a threat from set pieces. Someone who can hold up the ball and draw CB's out.
I agree with the positions but I wouldn't be using the words 'back up' - we should be looking to sign players who are good enough to get straight into the first team if need be.
I'm happy with the starting 11. I just think we need players who will provide better cover and are indeed good enough to go straight into the first team.
Totally agree with this, we don't need 'back-up' and 'cover', we need a first team ready group. Take centre-back, if Mawson or Robbo got long-term injured in game 1 we would need someone to come in and play at an equivalent standard and be able to compete with them when all are fit, giving Hecky some pleasant headaches. More important than ever now that short-term loans are no more. Hopefully Angus is the next Robbo off the production line.
No, I've described one of a pool of equivalent players as Robbo and Mawson are the certain starters on Saturday as the men in possession. The other centre halves need to be certain starters also. Say we had Kevin Long as well, you certainly couldn't describe him as 'back-up' or 'cover'.
