I often think the only way I could be seen as a bigger 2@ by the residents of this town would be if i became famous
According to Ian Botham, was the best and fairest of his kind. And I suppose he was visible to the general public in an era when the BBC covered all of the Tests, so anyone flicking between only 3 or 4 channels would see him fairly regularly . Sent from my SM-T710 using Tapatalk
He's done a lot more that's worthy of being 'famous' than many other people that have. He's particularly well known in Barnsley because he's from here! If you ask someone in Reading who doesn't like cricket they probably won't have heard of him. A cricket fan in Sydney though, yes. Seems an odd thing to post. People are famous for all kinds of things.
I had the pleasure of his company a couple of years back and contrary to what a lot of folk say I found him to be a lovely bloke who loves the town and Barnsley FC. Hes seen and done a lot more than most folk I reckon.
Yeah I've met him at Headingley and Oakwell and he seems a lovely chap. Supposedly he's tight, but what do you expect he's a Yorkshireman! He pays his way at Oakwell when I'm sure he'd be able to wangle a freebie if he wished.
Backs local charities and foundations. Proud of his home town. He is now 83 yrs of age. Must be a right lovely person. Some Barnsley folk see him as a freeloader. Is he really?
I think that when he funded the major construction of the players' balcony at Headingley it put to bed any misconceptions that he is "tight". The man is known and respected across the world. Not bad for "just an umpire"
What wind up? I have genuinely always been perplexed that a cricket umpire is so famous and has a statue erected. I couldn't name one cricket umpire and I bet most people are the same. Not a dig at him as a person.
Loved and respected world wide by all the players he umpired and the fans who watched. An icon of sportsmanship, honesty and fair play. But I don't like or get cricket. So my opinion on this subject has limited validity... He was mates with my Dad and knew more about his army boxing record than the favva ever let on. That's good enough for me..
Met him several times and he's a man who deserves to be called famous if not as an umpire but certainly his charitable work and giving freely of his time. . He opened a millennium event for me, and helped with the publicity for it, for which I am eternally grateful.
I have a feeling that you are under 30. Anyone who watched any cricket in the 60's 70's and 80's knew him as the best umpire in the world - Crickets equivalent of Pierluigi Collina in the football world. Not only was he a great umpire but he was prepared to talk to the TV and Press about decisions - unlike todays football referees - and he is a good honest straight talking yorkshireman So to answer your question - he was undisputably the best in the world for many years, has personality and is happy to talk to the media - thats why he is famous
Well he seems be famous enough to have attracted interest for you to post a random headline thread on him.
