Has a population of 1,293,057,000. That's 228,000,000 more than the United Kingdom. Oh, plus another billion on top of that. Out of all those people they can't find just one person skilled enough to even come third in a single Olympic event. I find that unbelievable. Even Kyrgyzstan have managed to win a medal.
Having been to India, they have a lot to worry about and pile resources into before concerning themselves with ribbons on Sports Day. Saying that, we'd see that reversed if T20 was in the Olympics. Sport pretty much starts and ends at Cricket and Kabbadi over there.
There's countries a lot poorer than India who have produced Olympic medallists at this games. However I do understand your point. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
It's certainly cultural as well. I don't think there's either the athletic tradition or the desire to show off on the world stage there as much as can be seen with some other nations.
As has Fiji with a population of less than a million people. And Puerto Rico. That said, I'd like to think that Great Britain's annual spending on training and competing in such sports is several times that of India's. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
I think they're too busy using my tax money to fund their space programme to bother with the olympics.
Having lived in India for a bit athletics is not really part of the Indian consciousness with their being little or no interest and as Monkey Red says very low on the priorities list. Whilst there are poorer countries as a whole the wealth in. Indian is concentrated into very few predominantly urban hands and the poverty in rural areas is as bad as anywhere you would find world wide.
I'd say the IPL is the exception to that. I can't stand cricket usually but even I can get a bit into the IPL which is something of a showpiece it must be said. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
Cricket is the exception, absolutely. Makes football support in Britain seem as passionate as stamp collecting.
But when almost one in five people on the planet are Indian, you'd think there would be a handful interested in sports other than cricket and good enough to compete at the top level. I can't imagine that Kenya throws millions at middle/long distance runners.
Sania Mirza is decent at Tennis, best female doubles player in the world in fact. Think they've a female Badminton player who's decent, couple of boxers and a player in the NBA too. But it is weird just how small an imprint they've made on sport over the years, barring Cricket of course.
India = Chaos I haven't been to all countries.......but cant see anywhere coming close to how good India is - although I'm an obvious racist :-(( Would love to live their through the winter months. I can imagine a sports field being built..........and within a week there were 10 families living on it - including grazing their animals
http://www.medalspercapita.com/ We don't do that well per head of population, given than many Olympic sports are played in British public schools and not many other places on earth
But my point was - the Olympics are stuffed full of sports invented and played by the British establishment. With reference to your comment about India, why should rugby 7s be in but not kabaddi?
No idea. That's a matter for the IOC. There are plenty of events that are in and people might disagree but that's a separate argument. Apparently there are a total of 306 events. You'd think that a countr of almost 1.3bn could manage to finish third in at least one.
Brazil arent exactly tearing up medals tabel as the host nation. Beach volley ball and football are their only sporting passions.
