I'd like to see Aaron Pierre from Wycombe as well as Long/Burke

I'd go Long simply because I've seen him play & think he's better than Mawson.

I've seen a few mention Burke. How often have any of you seen him play?

Personally think Long was overrated while he was here and until he was in a successful side he was pretty poor, regarding how times people have seen Burke play, I doubt many of us had seen Roberts, Mawson, Hourihane, Watkins and Winnall play before they joined us and they turned out great, I trust anyone that Hecky and the club see fit to replace Mawson IF he leaves this window but if I was to pick someone I'd have Burke

Can't argue with that logic. Was very impressed with Burke in the two league games against us (to be fair, McCardle was just as good), although I think he went off at h/t when we played them away. Couple of Bradford supporting friends rate him highly too. Their player of the year.

But if Long is available, it's a no brainer.

Maybe Angus is on board for that very reason. Far more experience and calibre tban Roberts had and he isnt doing too badly! Its what we do. DNA

I doubt it'll be someone we look at but Ryan Shotton would be high on my personal list. Would cost a fraction of what we'd get for Mawson and we all know how good he can be. Similar ball playing attributes to Alfie too.

I get the feeling that if he does go to somewhere like Sunderland, they won't have any intentions of loaning him back, as he'll be straight in contention for a first team place.

    He's good enough.

Whilst I really rated Ryan Shotton, I was rather surprised to find out that he's only made around 50 senior appearances. Another Nyatanga maybe, as in never quite reached the heights it looked like he would as a teenager?

You haven't got a clue about football. You think Ryan Kent's a number 10, Frimpong's a Barnsley all time great & Winnall & Roberts are ****. I'd take my 5 year old nephew's opinion over yours. Genuinely, you're proof that watching tonnes of football doesn't give you an understanding of the game.

Genuine question, how many times have you watched Burke play? Or is it just a 'he's good on FIFA in a couple of years pick?'.

That's what I thought, I've seen him twice & he looked good both times but it amazes me when other people make bold statements like 'best in league one' when they've only seen him play a handful of times at the most.

It's like all these Man Utd fans with Pogba. They're all raving over how great he is but I bet 99% of them never watch any Italian football & the only times they've seen him will have been when Juve made the champions league final & the Euro's where he was pretty average.

I think modern football fans just love hyping players up without watching them

Are you still cottoning on to what the club are trying to achieve in terms of recruitment?

I know what you're saying & I agree but at the same time I wasn't raving about them players before they'd signed because if not seen enough of them.

I rated Long, I thought he played a huge part in our turn around & would love him back

I'll be honest I haven't seen him play, but a lad at work is a Bradford City fan and says he's the real deal. Pretty sure Bradford had the best defensive record or clean sheets or something along those lines last year in which this 19 year old lad was an integral part of it.

You only need to look on wiki to see that:

'On 26 April 2016, Burke won a total of seven awards at Bradford City's end of season awards, including the Player of the Year award'

You're completely entitled to your opinion that Long would be a good replacement because you've seen him play, but just because none of us have seen a lot of Burke doesn't mean he might not be a better match.

Go look at Everton forums when they signed Stones and see how many of them had seen him play before.

I agree, he may be a better match. It's just the bold statements I take issue with.

For most a centre back who's good for one club will be good any club but we're a lot more attack minded than most & he'd need to fit in to our style of play, we know Long can do that.

From what I've seen of Bradford they're a very solid & unadventurous side who's full back's don't bomb on & the centre backs are given a lot of protection.

An example is Lovren, superb at Southampton with two full backs who don't get forward much & two big strong sitting midfielders but he goes to Liverpool where the full backs are given license to bomb on & there's only one holding player & he looked average at best.

I can't improve on these suggestions, but I actually do trust the board and scouting team to be doing their homework on possibilities. it might be that we need a season-long loan before bringing in a permanent replacement, or we may have been scouting a player already. Defenders aren't as easy to pick from Sky highlights as are good strikers, because you don't notice them so much. We do need a good strong policy of succession-planning to replace some of our key players. I would be reasonably confident that plans are in place to do so. Long on a permanent, or Burke, Blackett, or Moore on a season-long loan would seem a good idea.

Thats fair enough. (honestly not having a go/arguing :D )

Its understandable that some people would throw his name into the hat having not seen him play though.

Using the Stones example (again), Everton fans probably hadn't seen him play and may have preferred someone like McNair, Blackett, Chambers (possibly better examples to use) because they'd seen them play more - but we all know who we'd prefer.

I can understand your grievances with bold claims and outlandish statements, but when a club (not too dissimilar to ours) makes a 19 year old kid their player of the year in his first season, its reasonable to suggest its more than just a bit of hype.

Whether he'd fit into our system given we're more attacking than Bradford, I'm not so sure. I would however, have faith in Hecky to develop/utilize him for the good of the team.
