I don't understand that. I do know however Roberts is the better centre half of the two in question

I do actually agree that he's been playing better.

Both different types of centre halves, which is why they compliment each other so well, Roberts is better in the air and in the tackle, Mawson has better awareness and is better on the ball.

I don't understand why people can't see they are completely different players. Mawson isn't going to physically dominate like Roberts does and robbo isn't going to spray the ball about like Mawson can. That's what made them one of the best partnerships I can remember down at Oakwell. They complimented each other.

For what it's worth I prefer Robbo but I can understand why others would prefer Mawson.

I agree as well Roberts as a defender and also in physical game is better than Mawson, however as Hemsy says (for the wrong reasons) hes not worth the same, he's four years older, he's not as good on the ball (I don't think he's as bad as people try to make out but he isn't Alf's standard and also he scores alot more. No slight on either of them but I do prefer Roberts local lad and all that but both are brilliant and I think 5 mil is very good value for a lad who cost us next to nothing

Very different players. In today's world where everyone wants a Gerard Pique-esque defender, Alfie Mawson will be viewed as the better player. To old fashioned fans, Roberts is probably the more stand out defender. Personally, although I admire Mawson greatly and I'm sure he'll have the better career, I actually think we'd miss Roberts more. Roberts has a particular set of attributes that are very very useful (heading ability, strength, pace, long throw, coolness etc). I think they'd be a bigger miss than the ability to bring the ball out of defence with class.

Agree. Both me and son said we would be more disappointed if it was Roberts. Mawson I feel can be replaced, Roberts is the no nonesense Defender we have Been lacking for years

then why have we failed for absolutely years to sign a Roberts type player who wins header after header and doesn't get bullied or get caught out of position too far up field.

Roberts is a proper defender and we're lucky to have him, to say he's all round better than Mawson is a bit naive, totally different kinds of players.

But the trouble is we've now only got one of them, we'll have to see what this Angus lad is like but you'd have to expect we'd have another CB (or three) coming in shortly as who do we have after that?

roberts is a good player and if he has a decent few months then chances are he'll be gone come january, such is life when we are faced with a pile of teams that have money to fcukin burn.

Have to agree based on this season. Roberts has looked immense. Quicker, stronger in the air and knows when to get rid. Also think he reads the game very well. Good luck to Alfie, he was brilliant for us, but not irreplaceable

I think to sum it up if there was 2 of both you'd go with 1 each of Mawson & Roberts rather than 2 Mawson's or 2 Roberts.

It's all about partnerships. Look at Arsenal a few years back, everyone was raving about Vermaelen but when he got injured they realised that even though Kocielny & Mertesacker might not have the same quality they made a better partnership.
