I can live with the Alfie situation. With Newcastle, Sunderland and Wolves circling it was inevitable that he'd be leaving. Bristol City? HaHa! The lad has done wonders for us, owes us nothing and deserves the chance to establish himself at a higher level. We have others to develop in the ranks, money to spend (if we want) and I dare say most on here would be happy if Kevin Long turns out to be the replacement. But here's a thing. Five days to go until Wednesday night. What happens if someone comes in for Conor Hourihane? To me, that would really rip the guts out of the team. True, he'll walk next Summer unless we do something remarkable. But we have no need for further money now. Let's be right - if someone popped up with £10M we'd have to sell. But if it was another £5M? To me that would be selling your Championship survival. I hope the club thinks the same way. Roll on Thursday!
Unless any players really seriously spit the dummy out to the point of striking, we need to hold on to everyone now any stand firm to any offers other than the Carroll to Liverpool-like ridiculous. We've got work to do as it is to replace Alfie and bring in cover for other areas with 5 days of the window left. To lose another key player, especially our captain, might turn out to be worth more than any big fee if it pulled us into a relegation.
I think we already have conor hourihane's replacement sat on the bench in George Moncur Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Bang on, best of luck to him! Great transfer for all parties involved. I absolutely believe Hecky & PC when they say no one will be sold without an adequate replacement which means I really can't see CH leaving for anything other than silly money.
I agree he's likely to be his eventual replacement but he'll probably need time to bed in and I think it would be a bit much to expect him to replace him this window.
Before anyone says anything, he posted that on a public group I'm in, I'm not his friend on facebook. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks for posting this. This is what I was talking about the other day with it been obvious Mawson's agent was trying to force a move. Bids happen often, we've probably had bids for other players this window that we've not heard about. The only reason they become public is if either the club want to sell so are trying to initiate a bidding war or the player & agent are trying to force a move. In this case Alfie & his agent were the ones releasing the info & as we didn't want to sell.
Reviewing this thread, what emerges about Alfie is surprising to me. To be fair, if you've seen/heard him interviewed you'd say he has always demonstrated what you might call (if you were being polite) a dour countenance. And yet his community work and contribution have been fantastic, to go by the reports. So it's surprising that he seems not to have been a particularly positive influence in the dressing room. You'd not have known that from his play. He's done wonders for us and played a huge part in our success last season while notably developing his game. To have had such a big season out of him and moved him on for a considerable profit looks (post-Rotherham and after the signing of Adam Jackson) a tremendous bit of business. Really, the epitome of what Patrick Cryne explained as our new way of working. But how fantastic is it to have retained Conor? I had real fears about this one, because I think the lad is ultimately destined for a higher level. But right now it would have put a big hole in our team. I think that he will be vital to our chances of gaining a foothold in this division. So well done to all concerned.
