Just to point out, you dont have to be young to still need to learn... I'm fairly sure at some point in your life you will change jobs, or get promoted. There wont be an under 23 department for you to learn the ins and outs of your new role...
What's age got to do with owt ? How many championship games have our centre halfs played compared to theirs ? So what you're saying is that the oldest centre half should obviously be the best .
When players move up a league their expected a bedding period, fair enough we can't excuse mistakes all season as "he's learning" but some leeway is needed for a lad that has never played higher than the conference before, also speaking alot of Leeds fans Taylor is vastly overrated and alot of the hype around comes from the fact Leeds lack of proper LB to challenge him and that he was caught in the hype over the progression of Cook and Byram and bundled into the same category. We may have had the oldest defender on the pitch we also didn't have one with Europa League and International experience at the back, or one from a Premiership club.
I wasn't referring to age necessarily. You don't have to be young to learn your trade somewhere. Joe Hart fo example will have to learn and adapt to the Italian game (probably a bad example but the best I can think of). Between our back 4, they've played what, 25 chanpionship games between them? The only way they're going to improve is by playing games. Obviously it's easier to drop players into the development squad to make their mistakes but the standard of football is much poorer for one, and you've to have a squad big enough to be able to do so. Something we don't have the luxury of being able to do. Hence the reason that we've 4 inexperienced defenders learning their trade all at once, and a few more equally as inexperienced players (White excluded) as back up. I questioned the recruitment a month ago and I still do. I'm all for development but they have to have it in them Archey. I very much doutbt they have. When you see a Stones, Holgate, Bree, Drinkwater, Fletcher, Mawson, Brownhill and to some extent Hourihane. They have that Raw talent. They all have the builiding blocks of the basics. They can do the basics very well for that position. 80% of this will be mental. The mistake for the second goal was a mental lapse in concentration I watch a lot of u18 Football so I'm okay with players learning. I like to watch it but I feel with some they are building on sand
But they clearly do have it in them, as has been proved by the fact that opposition fans have singled them out for praise. Of course they'll make the odd mistake which they did on Saturday, but at the end of the day we can't sign the finished article because we can't afford them, and even if we did, they wouldn't be perfect. Look at Mawson, he was probably at fault for Huddersfield's winner this season. He's still a great player, but made an error. Even the best make errors. Did you see the Barcelona game last night? Shocker from ter Stegen! Doesn't mean he isn't good enough for Barcelona, but he made a terrible error. There is no player in the world who is error-free, and quite honestly, what I've seen in most of our team so far I'm very happy with, and with Championship experience they should only get better!
My posts may be pedantic. Call them as such and that's fine. But that does not make me personally pedantic (said he somewhat pedantically). Anyway, to post pedantically is something of a badge of honour. I do get slightly annoyed when relatively new posters use the board to get personal with others. The idea on here is to debate the words of others. There is no need to do more. But that is how things seem to be these days. Nasty undertones.
I don't think the issue is that they're nor capable, I think the problem is that we've gambled on signing exclusively inexperienced centre backs. I don't doubt that both MacDonald and Roberts can both be quality Chanpionship Centre halves, I would say Roberts is there already, but I feel both would benefit with an experienced head alongside of them. Eventually I think they will be less prone to error with more games they play. Playing under 18s football prepares you for playing against under 18s players and is no substitution for the real thing. Playing in the academy cannot prepare you for facing the likes of Glenn Murray, Chris Wood or Chris Martin. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
I'm actually sat here with a professional CB that know Roberts from school, and who's team mate at his former club played with Robbo at Halifax. Now bear in mind, the player has been a pro since the age of 16(since leaving school), and at school Roberts was classed as the brighter prospect. In Fact he seems to think that Roberts was supposed to have a trial at Oakwell as a kid, but injured himself in the days leading up to it(dont quote him/me on that, as he isn't 100% certain). What he's trying to get at, is that Roberts had all the Raw talent as a kid, but circumstances led to him taking a different path into the professional game... The pro i'm with, a center back by trade with 200 league games under his belt, was saying that 50% of a centre back's game in based of physical attributes(strength, pace jumping ability etc), about 30%technical and the last 20% is mental which no one starts with, but will naturally develop with experience and game time. So, Hemmsy please stop getting on their backs as they have made their way to the pro game a different way to your favorites. They have as much of a chance of forging a solid Championship career as anyone else....

Archey I have a real problem this this experience. It's talent we need. Stones didn't have experience but he could spot a 25 yard gap in the defence. Abraham at bristol. Hes not got experience hes just a talented lad. What really annoys me. Young Left back on Saturday. Got so much grief. We knew we had a shacky left back. Why not go and get someone decent. We surely have a good rep with teams in the prem. Ben Mansford mentioned last year that 4 of the 6 had talked to PH about getting players to us because they liked how we developed Flectcher. borthwick-jackson, Garbutt. Two players quickly off the top of my head what would have been perfect. Put pressure on White. PH goes and gets a bit of both and Layton Oritent fans were surprised that we had signed him on their forum.
As I've said plenty of times before, MacDonald may become a championship level player over time, but at this level we cant afford to be bedding in young, untested players. We need everyone at 100%. Now I know its become a love in on here regards our transfer policy, and on the whole I agree but lets cast our minds back a year ago when things werent quite as rosey and we had to ditch a whole loads of players and make new signings because that very same policy was failing terribly. The fact is, we replaced our best CB who we sold for £5m with a lad from Torquay. Again, not saying it wont turn out to be a good signing but when you already have a back 4 so inexperienced, I'd have probably made signing someone along the lines of Reece Burke top priority. Someone still young and hungry but with the experience of first team football at a good level. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
You have just said the first team isn't for developing players, so why is it ok to play and develop the likes of Borthwick-Jackson in the first team? Sent from my KFFOWI using Tapatalk
Also, lets not forget these very same Leeds fans think they battered us and we were lucky to not ship 4 or 5. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Read what I put. It's okay to develop players but they have to be good enough. Stones. Didn't matter if he was 18 or 28. He was good enough to play. It was a added benefit to Barnsley that he was 18 and developed into what turned out to be one of biggest transfer fee's ever for an 18 year old. Borthwick- Jacksons a good player. Good enough for the champ. But he will devleop.
