Defensively McDonald's done better in his championship appearances than Mawson did. Obviously Mawson's better on the ball. There's been a bit of a love in for Borthwick-Jackson & Fosu-Mensah but both benefited from a manager who played very negative football with 2 holding midfielders. Borthwick-Jackson hasn't looked up to much in the championship & Fosu-Mensah was last seen having a nightmare in the league cup at Northampton. As for 'Leyton Orient fans didn't rate Kpekawa'. So what? That's football. How many players have we had over the years who were **** for us but done well elsewhere? Who would've thought Chris Wood would prove himself at this level after how bad he was on loan for us? Players fit in at different clubs & mature at different ages.
Could not agree more. I would rather have players here who are prepared to put their neck on the line for the club, wear the shirt with pride and run through brick walls for one another rather than prima dona teenager's on 50k a week with the heart of a pea any day of the week.
It's the defensive blend I'm criticising, not individual players. Instead of adding experience to the unit in the window, we've had a net loss.
Given the realities of being Barnsley in the Championship, every potential signing can only fulfill 2 of the following 3 criteria: Guaranteed championship ability/experience Not over the hill or past it Available permanently without overstretching our budget I think we are choosing the correct 2.
Precisely. Yiadom, Bree, Roberts, Kpekawa have all made huge steps to this level from where they were a year ago. Roberts and Mawson had a great partnership and understanding so had a great platform to push on from at this level but Roberts was always the no2 out of the pair in terms of where he was at in his development and in particular his vocal and organisational skills. It was crying out for a more experienced man to come in and take over from Mawson. Instead we expect the player we saw as the understudy to now become the senior guy. Barmy. Why be such an arse? People sticking up for our current centre halves? Whats problem with that? Lots of centre halves on bigger money at bigger clubs. . .Further down the league. If you can't be positive about your own players then **** off and watch leeds. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
Ha ha. You've been doing too much Facebook posting, Vince. We have a bit more decorum on here...sometimes!
Lost here... I thought you'd commented on this that I'd put: BBS, the home of the unappreciated super coach-manager-scouts. Mistakes happen, and will happen throughout a season/footballers career. It's human nature. Angus had a top game on Saturday. He's got better each game, and will continue to do so. The more experience he gains, the more he will improve. One minute you're all for the recruitment policy in place, and the next you're all baying for blood. It's ridiculous. It's not as if we're getting battered every week. ^^ That's what I thought you was commenting on with: 'Maybe we should bring back the "experienced" Nyatanga then eh?' I have said no bad word against any of our current players, nor would I, they play for the club and give it there all every game.
So to sum this thread up : Opposition fan : 'your player's good' Several Barnsley fans : 'Don't talk wet, he's crap. Not because of any pre conceived idea I have at all though.' Alrighty then.
Re: So to sum this thread up : No pre conceived thoughts at all, just going on the evidence that we have seen which clearly show he's not at the required level yet. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If the guy had seen my previous post praising our efforts further up the thread, he'd have known I was being ironic about Nyatanga. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
Nope. I wasn't replying to your post. I'm happy with the central defensive pairing, and my Nyatanga comment was just a bit of irony for those that perhaps wanted us to bring in some "experience" Had you read the whole thread I think I already praised Angus. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
The fact of the matter is, if we'd signed MacDonald from a Premier League club on loan, people would be raving about his performances. Simply because he was signed from the National League, people are saying he's not good enough, even though he's proved that he is, otherwise he wouldn't be playing, or we would be conceding tonnes of goals. We aren't going to sign players who are experienced because it's not our transfer policy, and I doubt we'd do much better than we are With Mawson in the side, we conceded 4, 0, 2, 2: 8 in 4 games With MacDonald in the side, we have conceded: 0, 1, 0, 2, 2, 1, 2: 8 in 7 games So if it's so obvious that he's not good enough, please could someone find a stat that proves the opposite of the above, where it has taken 3 more games to concede as many goals as we did with Mawson, and a reason why he isn't good enough, other than the 'he signed from a National League team, so shouldn't be good enough' preconception As I said on another post, no player is error-free, so even if we had signed John Stones, he may have made an error (obviously I'm not saying MacDonald is as good as Stones). A Premier League loanee is just as likely as anyone to make an error, as is anyone who is within our budget
Keep ya stats, I can make my own judgements on players from what I see and I am always a nervous wreck whenever hes on the ball. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
My own opinion is that Alfie has been generally overrated. Towards the end of last season/start of this one it seemed to me to be Roberts who was the dominant defender and also distributor from the back. That is not to criticize Alfie. I wish he was still with us. Big Mac is one of those who will always have his limitations but as long as he plays it simply and avoids delusions of Beckenbauer, he has the chance to be able to be comfortable at this level, which would attract plaudits for both him, and the club for risking a punt on him. Long way to Torquay. Was this what Tommy was moaning about?
You might be nervous but there's a difference between someone looking uncomfortable playing passes from the back (MacDonald) than say an M'Voto who looked uncomfortable & was regularly giving it away in dangerous areas
