You're getting quite close to understanding the concept of social housing. Just missing a history lesson or two... :)

    What !!
Council houses are supposedly for the act of offering someone a home in which they would otherwise not be able to obtain in the circumstances in which they find themselves . When that situation improves to the extent they can purchase a home then they should leave the council house and buy same as others in the buying situation not have an advantage with subsidies .
The whole subject of people buying council houses because otherwise they wouldn't be able to own a house is bazaar .
It's like pulling the ladder up once you have benefitted a fek the rest ,typical Tory values.

Social housing is to me a means of keeping the "social" down where they're supposed to be.

It's for you now to fill me in with the history, and where we go from here...

Just because it's possible to buy a council house doesn't make it right.
What about the next person that comes after your dad ,is it hard lines son I bet you to it.?
If the previous person in that council house had bought it what would have happened to your dad ,?
Probably been in debt all his life paying a private landlord.
Pulling the ladder up behind you is toryism full stop.

Not sure I understand your position Marlon.

You seem to want to keep people like my father paying rent for the rest of their lives.

    Fair enough.

BTW he isn't getting benefits. It's all from his own income. No help from the state. Ever.

Do you think that someone who has paid for his house in rent 5 times over, who has kept it in good order, should not be allowed to buy it and pass it on to his kids like those in the private sector do?

My dad was a socialist, bless his soul.

We lived in a council house.

Then he bought it cos it was the obvious thing to do.

The problem with this escapes me.

    Utter rubbish .
I don't want to keep anybody down anywhere ,
Council houses are for people who can't afford to buy but want to get on.
It's a means of people le on low wages having a base and a decent standard of living .
Social housing was built for just that.
Thatcher knew exactly what she was doing and put a bomb into the society she supposedly didn't believe in.
I can't see how you can justify buying social housing when it's not gonna get passed on to people in the situation as they themselves were in and grateful to receive.
Your dad's house is now taken from where it's needed and probably sold to a private landlord with the proceeds going to someone who probably doesn't need it
Social housing was built out of the lower classes saying no more to the ruling classes sending them to wars and expecting them to keep the status quo when they returned.

And yet it's fine for somebody in exactly the same position but with a different landlord? I really don't understand why you're drawing this distinction.

    Obvious to who ?
Obviously because that's not what social housing was built for .
It's not temporary social housing for certain people .
The subsidies he received were taxpayers .

There is a difference between morality and legality.

I'm still struggling to see how believing that social housing should be retained for the next generation to benefit from rather than being sold off to private owners makes ME the one wanting to harm the working class.

Not to provide permanent affordable housing to defend against exploitative landowners and slum landlords? To give 'Home for heroes' following the world wars, with sanitation, running water and a piece of land to grow produce. To provide independence from squires, landowners and pit companies, who you probably worked for and had no choice but to hand back half your wages in rent, with no long term security, tenant rights or guaranteed property maintenance. A bereaved family could find themselves evicted in days. The whole village of Denaby Main, found themselves evicted during the strike of 1903, when the men dared to demand payment for digging out muck as well as coal.

I could go on, if I was bothered..:)

I think the whole concept of social housing escapes you. A Socialist would never buy a council house. That's an oxymoron and a half. :)

My Dad drove ambulances in the Army, when he came out after 12 years he couldn't afford to buy a house in Hoyland. But he had to live within 5 minutes walk of his civvy Ambulance Station. Without a council house he'd have been knackered. Nothing's changed. The vast majority of London's key workers, can't afford to live anywhere near their jobs.
My old man was never a socialist. If I sold his council house, his ghost would give my immoral arse a reight kicking..

Nothing against your dad personally by the way.
He was probably no different to thousands of others who were given a chance they could only dream of
It was the system of taking social housing from where it were needed by a snidey Tory cabinet who although helped a few knew it would damage our communities in the long run.

Those people who buy their own houses loose them when having to go in a home because they have to pay for it. If in a council house they cannot take that of you not yours.

The problem is not selling council houses, the problem is not taking the proceeds from the sales and using them to build new council houses for the next generation to use. This would have reduced long term maintenance costs (newer houses need less maintenance) while continuing to provide affordable social housing for future generations and allowing councils to employ skilled workmen to do the building work. It would also have stopped the housing price bubble over the last 15 years making it easier for the young to get on the housing ladder.

Like many of the Tory policies, selling off council houses gave a short term gain but the government should be looking at the bigger picture. A government exists to serve the people and provide services to the people. Not selling them off to the highest bidder then leaving the working classes to pay increasing higher costs to use something that should be a right not a luxury.
