All I ever hear from people is how their these massive superior giants, Like they are Real Madrid and we are Stalybridge. The funny thing is I've been a regular supporter for a good 12-14 years now and in that time these 'massive' clubs have either been piddling about in the middle of the championship or slogging it out in League One, very much like ourselves. People can blab on about attendances etc that comes from being in a big city or reminisce about stuff that happened over two ******* decades ago but at the end of the day it is a very very long time since these clubs were anymore advanced than the 'likes' of Barnsley. Everyone needs to stop talking bullsh*t, give up encouraging the arrogant tosspots and get with the times. This is the 21st century. Wigan, Bournemouth and Burnley are Premier League Regulars. Leicester City are champions of England. Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday are average championship clubs.
You are right. All three have fallen on hard times in recent years but you can't just ignore history as if past achievements mean nothing. They all have illustrious First Division histories. Leeds and Forest have plenty of European experience and, under Brian Clough, Forest were champions of Europe twice. Wednesday are a long way behind those two and will probably never match them for trophy wins. This isn't me claiming that they are "massive superior giants" as you put it. It's just that I'm old enough to remember what a privilege it was for us to get players like Allan Clarke and Norman Hunter, both Elland Road legends. They both gave us great service as both players and managers. Danny Wilson and Viv Anderson took a step down to come to us from Wednesday. Fans of clubs like this might still be living in the past to some degree, but I wish WE had European adventures and triumphs to look back on. I hope, in some ways, that they have a lot longer outside the limelight but you can't deny that they've been places and done things that we haven't yet managed. As this century goes on the "old order" is changing. Who would have thought that Bournemouth could establish themselves alongside the Arsenals and Liverpools? Maybe our turn will come again, and next time we will be better prepared for it.
No offence, but I think the clue is in the 12-14 years bit of your OP. Wednesday I think is definitely arguable but as much as I give my Leeds mates some stick, them and Forest have a long and illustrious history and have a fair case that they should be doing much better if not for mismanagement.
You are right The only thing is they are City clubs and get bigger gates. Gives them more clout financially. There again they do not lash out on big transfer fees to say they are Mega???
Apparently so, seeing as it is SO LONG ago. Not relevant to anyone who has only been watching us 12-14 years is it?
I did note that bit, but decided not to comment on it. I have since though! I really am NOT a Wednesday follower but I will admit to going to watch them back in the 60s/early 70s when they were an established First Division club. There was no wall to wall TV coverage then so what better way to watch International players? Shamefully you could get a cheap bus excursion from Barnsley bus station to Hillsborough and it was peanuts to get in. As a young teenager I was a bit overawed being in 40,000 crowds but it was fantastic seeing these great players in the flesh (talking about other clubs, obviously!). I only went if Barnsley were away though and I would even watch our Reserves in a Central League match on a Saturday afternoon ahead of going to Sheffield. It's easy to throw insults around in football these days, but I prefer to give credit where credit is due. They've made some proper BAD decisions at Hillsborough in recent years but they do have a relatively illustrious history. Not as good as the one that we will have this century though. Shame I won't be around for the next Millennium
I don't know any reds fans that big up Wednesday, Leeds or Forest as "massive superior giants" . I do however know plenty like myself that accept that they, and many other clubs in this league, are bigger and have better resources than ourselves. Regardless of their past, or where they are now the same applies. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
