A game we should have had at least a point out of. Whilst no one was outstanding for us, as a team we looked far stronger than Wednesday all over the field. The thing that let us down today was finishing and being wasteful with crosses and set peices. Sam and Bradshaw both missing chances whilst Westwood made a great save from Payne. Definitely not disheartened after this one. The result hurt but it didn't feel as bad as previous defeats at Hillsborough. Normally our fans are turning nasty at full time. We've mainly watched awful Barnsley teams lose over the last few years at Hillsborough. With the fans undecided or turning against the manager. This year it sounded like every fan in that away end was 100% behind Hecky and the last. The singing right through the Wednesday second to the final whistle was something the players and particularly Hecky. Davies -6- Didnt have much to do at all. Couldn't do anything about either goal from my view. Bree -5- When Scowen plays wide right we rely on the Bree overlap to be effective in an attacking sense down the right. I felt Bree lacked belief first half when Wednesday were there for the taking. Maybe he was wary of Reach but he didnt seem to want to commit to the overlap often leaving Scowen isolated and looking for either a square ball or floating one into the channel. Looked like he was fouled for their first goal but either way he got caught under the ball and Joao won the header. Roberts -5- A few errors tonight from Robbo. Took too many unnecessary risks playing out from the back which didnt pay off. I'll have to watch it again but I'm sure their first goal came from a phase of play not long before when Robbo tried to play one down the right which he should have hoofed away. Solid as ever in the air. MacDonald -5- Again solid in the air against the poor Joao and Fletcher. Like Robbo made mistakes and unfortunately Angus mistake gave Wednesday their first goal. Yiadom -6- Yids as solid and skillfull as ever. Calm on the ball which gets us out of some tricky situations. Supported Kent well. Best of the defence last night. Kent -6- Looks so dangerous but he is so wasteful. The way he runs at defences he should be a player that gets you on the edge of your seat but it's got to the point where no one expects anything now. It took Hammill about 5 minutes on the field to show a quality end product. I actually thought Kent played well last night but looking back he again produced nothing in terms of a quality pass, cross or shot. Hourihane -5- Didn't really get in the game. No mistakes but not his usual self. Produced a mix bag in terms of quality of set pieces. Morsy -8- Our man of the match. Won so much ran his blood to water. The booking stifled his game a little. Scowen -6- Did okay but without the support of Bree you could tell he wasn't a winger tonight. With Wednesday being so poor this was probably a game where we could have gone back to the 2 flying wingers approach. Hindsight is a wonderful thing though and I'd never change the side after 2 greats wins. Bradshaw -6- Did well and worked his socks off but just couldnt finish. Winnall -5- Never really got it the game. Missed a good half chance where he miss kicked a volley which lead to a Bradshaw header. It wasnt to the same extent as on Saturday but again 1-2 moves broke down because of Sams poor touch or wrong decision making. Hopefully he'll get back in the goals at Cardiff. Hammill -7- Brilliant in his short time on the field. A great run which set up Payne. At the time I thought he was 2 footed by Hutchinson. Now I'm not sure. Payne -5- Could have scored with a very clever flick. Lost his man for the goal though. His defensive skills are probably the worst I've ever seen from a player. From those ratings it's probably hard to see why we deserved at least a point but we did. As a team in terms of our set up, organisation, effort and skill we were far far better than Wednesday. Their performances saw a few 4/10. A goal from Bradshaw would have changed the game for sure and I think had that happened we'd have won the game comfortably.
Davies - 6 Bree - 5 (close to being a four how bad he was first half) MacDonald - 6 Roberts - 6 Yiadom - 7 (agree. Best out of the defence and can't really remember see him do much wrong. Been fantastic this year.) Kent - 6 Hourihane - 6 (thought he would have shined last night. Some good balls but didn't seem to get a foot hold) Morsy - 6 Scowen - 6 (started poorly down that right hand side but grew into the game) Bradshaw - 6 Winnall - 6 Subs: Janko wasn't on long enough Hammill - 9 (tore them apart when he came on. Needs to be back in the fold after his suspension.) Payne - 7 Not a lot of individual quality, but as a team, it was really good to watch at times and the effort was unreal.
Sorry a few errors in the second paragraph. ***This year it sounded like every fan in that away end was 100% behind Hecky and the lads. The singing right through the Wednesday second goal to the final whistle was something the players and particularly Hecky will remember for a long time.
