I was brought up in Hull and was born five miles away from the dump. I couldn't think of anything worse than supporting those *******s.

Bet they come to oakwell and sing "......I wanna go home" cringe. Another thing that's wrong with modern day football people not supporting their local teams. Having said that my local team is leeds I could be at Elland road in ten mins I only come oakwell as my dad is from Barnsley and started taking me in the premiership years and carried it on. I jumped on the band wagon and haven't got off can't change now though. If I was born in a town and wasnt influenced by parents when young I'd like to think I'd follow my local team.

I'm sure there are a lot of good and genuine reasons why some fans don't support their local club - who their Dad supported would be high up the list but there are a lot of glory supporters who just jump on a bandwagon hence the number of Man U / Chelsea / Liverpool fans there are all over the country.

Fans with no link to the town / city whatsoever but who support a winning club because it's easy. They're the plastic fans.

Similar to me living all my life in Huddersfield but supporting Barnsley through Dad and his side of the family. I jumped on the bandwagon though after beating Ipswich Town 2-0 in the third round of the FA Cup in 1990 though :D Never felt like any less of a fan for not living in Barnsley. It's a great town that I love visiting. Plus had I supported my birth town i'd have missed out on the premiership that they haven't been in, seen league two football that we've not seen, seen an FA Cup semi final and quarters that they haven't seen in my time. We've knocked them out of the league cup and beat them 7-1 too. Way better time supporting who I support.

Going one further. Isn't it weird we've all got loads of Man Utd /Liverpool supporters with absolutely no affiliation! BUT stranger more is why didn't they choose Stockport or Tranmere instead? Mmmm strange one is that?

I know lots of fans of the Liverpool and man united whose "support" is limited to watching sky and wearing the shirt.

When my mate used to live on the south coast he saw local man u and Liverpool "fans" chasing each other around Brighton.

They can't feel the highs and lows like us, surely?

I agree completely. Many of these plastic glory fans may consider themselves supporters but I don't think they have a true emotional connection with the club, not in the same way that we have and that many other real fan's have with their clubs.

It's unlikely that I'll be moving back to Barnsley anytime soon, so my children will be born and raised in Leeds.

They can support whichever team they like, but I'm not taking them anywhere other than Oakwell :)
