Over the years I have read many threads on here about how far people have travelled to watch the Super Reds play. And enjoyed some incredible stories. When I was hanging of the balcony at 3am in the morning in PNG trying to pick up free WiFi to find out the score, I wondered what is the craziest thing anyone on the BBS has done, just to find out the score of a Reds game. This is not designed to be a “who is the best fan” thread. Just wondered who had the most extreme / funniest story to tell.
Working in Berlin there was only one bar called the James Joyce that I new Was showing the reds against Bolton in the 2.2 draw at home on sky, buzzing at the thought I set off with an 1hr to go betor kick off to get a good seat only to find out there was An English rugby team on a tour in there wanting to watch the rugby which was On at the same time. It cost me free beer for them for 2 hrs just for them to Watch the footy. Well worth it though. You reds.
I convinced my missus that I was feeling a bit ill on holiday so I could go back to the hotel and listen to the game on player. It was the home game against MK Dons where we lost 5-3. I was feeling worse after. #TeamsLikeBarnsley
Went to Wednesday the other year with food poisoning. Had shits and throwing up all game and they scored a last minute winner. Had to stop at nearly every hotel, pub and service station on the way there and back home to Beverley to spew out of one end. Got started on by three or four idiots outside the ground as well after. What a **** day.
I was on HMS Arethusa in Pompey Dockyard. I phoned the gaffer to tell her I had to stay onboard that weekend as we had a load of new joiners and couldn't get back home to where I lived then in Hackenthorpe. It went down like a lead balloon specially as we sailed on the Monday and didn't return from the world trip for 10 months.
I was living out in Madagascar for a year, and was out in the "bush" for 4 weeks. The only internet was over a 4 hour walk away, and that was only if you paid enough money to get the generator turned on. Otherwise it was 6 hours walk back to the main town. The phone signal was almost non existent... I say ALMOST! the locals had discovered a place where you could get 2 bars!.. They built a make shift scaffold out of tree branches that rose 10ft in the air, in the middle of a dusty piece of scrub land. If you stood right at the top, with your arm in the air, you could get enough signal to send out a text... then you climb back up later to see if you had a reply. During this time... September 2006. we beat wolves 1 - 0. Lost to Preston 1 - 0. And lost to luton 2 - 1 Heady days under Ritchie.... Until November anyway!.
Watched reds v blunts in BenIdorm 2009. I'd been drinking all day and forgot match was on until I saw it on a big screen in one of bars. Watched what I thought was last bit of game end at 0 0 and off I went. Next day I was was out again, and got sat with some blunts fans, who were telling me how well we had played and how they had nicked the 2 2 draw. Turns out I'd left at half time! Was on holiday in NYC with my family just before Christmas a few years ago and we were playing Wednesday at Oakwell in a televised match. We found a sports bar just around the corner from the hotel and sat at one side of an almost empty bar watching the game while at the other side of the bar a group of about six Wednesday fans were watching the game on another TV. Gradually, as the first half progressed, the place started to fill up, girls dressed like Santa's little helpers and wearing artificial antlers and guys wearing Santa outfits and our view of the TV was starting to get blocked as a result. For the second half we wandered across the room to where the Wednesday fans were to find most weren't Wednesday fans but simply South Yorkshire exiles finding an excuse to get together. One lad from Mexborough taking great delight in telling me and my lad how wonderful it was to hear a Tarn accent again. By the time the game finished (we lost) our small group, glued to the TV was lost in a sea of antlers, elf outfits and Santa outfits, all part of NYC's 'Santacon'. I don't think I'll ever experience a more bizarre setting for watching the Reds ever again!!
I lived in Canada in the seventies, no WIFI back then (don't know your born). Bought a short wave radio and sat with it at 12:00 on a Saturday trying to pick up sports report. The reception on a short wave goes in and out, so it wasn't unusual to get a report Barnsley 3 Chesterfield crackle crackle crackle.
My wife bought me a steam train ride over the Settle-Carlisle line on New Years' Day 1994. It was bitterly cold and when the train stopped at England's highest railway station, Dent, I asked round a few people but nobody knew the score (we were away at Middlesbro). Eventually somebody said that they'd heard we were losing 2-1. To cut a long story short I didn't get home till the early hours of the next day and found out on CEEFAX that the game had been abandoned at half time. We drew the rearranged game in April 1-1.
That's genius. I remember years ago with my schoolmates watching Lincoln v Chester midweek. Chester had brought 13 fans, so you can imagine how much noise they made (or didn't). Near the end of the game, Lincoln, 3-0 down, missed a simple chance. Nobody really reacted much except this lass who wasn't one of the sharpest in our year, who started ranting about how Lincoln had missed a great chance to salvage a draw. Despite the lack of noise from the travelling fans, I still find it hard to believe that anybody, completely sober, could fail to notice TWO goals while inside the ground.
In my defence I had a days alcohol abuse and the hours time difference to fall back on. You must have fallen to sleep Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
Launch night for a William Hill betting shop opposite the Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid and managed to convince everyone that the best sport to display on the new 90ft video wall on launch night was an English Championship game ........ Free hospitality and bar all night capped off with Nottingham Forest 0 Reds 2
Last year in lanzerote was walking round looking for a bar showing the Rotherham v Leeds game but none seemed to be showing it. After a while I asked a couple of blokes whom I thought were Newcastle fans ,turned out clocks in Lanzerote stay same as UK and alternate accordingly so I was an hour early. One of the blokes said he didn't know Barnsley were playing which I replied it was the Rotherham v Leeds match that was on . He said I thought Barnsley were playing going with the accent I can tell that accent anywhere which surprised me as I thought all yorkshire accents sounded same to someone not from around here , especially as I'd toned it down a lot. Anyway didn't go into it too much as it turned out they were from Sunderland and not Newcastle . Had a few drinks with them and was late to meet up with missus which didn't go down too well.
Was that the game where we completely outplayed them, their 2 goals coming from dodgy penalties (Clattenburg specials), their only efforts on target?
Travelled to Coventry away while suffering from severe concussion, passed out twice on my way down there. The whole stadium was literally spinning for the whole match, found out a few days later we'd lost 4-1!
