Seems to be wheeled out by the fans of most clubs we play.

I could half understand it coming from a team like Newcastle who are running away with the league, but Cardiff?

Is it all about money? It's got to be surely?

Can't be about league position, as prior to kick off we were nicely above them.

Form? Identical over last 6 games.

Goal difference? Us +3 them -12 and us being one of the highest scoring teams in the division.

Attendances maybe? They average around 2k more despite being in the Welsh capital and having 4 times larger population that Barnsley does.

This "rich owner" and malarkey is seriously messing with lots of fans heads and making them delusional about where they are in relation to other, better run clubs.

"Teams like Barnsley" don't buy success. Any success is hard earned.

Birmingham could well follow suit here. Rowett was their "hecky" to a degree and it sounds like he had the total belief of the support there, and the progress they'd made under him was steady.

Zola, whilst deserving respect from their supporters because of his stature in football and career, has a lot to prove as a manager and is on a hiding to nothing to satisfy the owners desire to expand the "brand", when the fact is that they're a standard championship club. He'll not get much time from those on the terraces if things don't go well.

When I look around football now, I've got to say that what our club is doing is basically what got me hooked on the game 37-38 years ago. Honesty (and quality at the moment) on the pitch, connected to its support, a manager who keeps it simple.

Our current league position, with the odd wonderful exception, is generally as high as we have gone. But it's not down to mediocrity, it's a positive collective effort that's got us where are. And as a supporter, just having a bit of hope of more to come is a wonderful feeling. Give me what we have any day. Might sound daft, but I don't think investment from someone who genuinely understands and loves the club and the area would see us do any better.

Football in all aspects – including perception of size - has changed dramatically from when I first started watching circa 40 years ago. Then, there was still rivalry amongst fans but it was based almost entirely on where you were in the league and to a slight degree attendances/size of ground. Now, we get fans and players claiming a club is big based on a) size of city e.g. Leeds b) Support potential e.g. Leeds c) past history from donkeys years ago e.g. Leeds d) Media hype e.g. Leeds....for me a club is and always will be as 'big' as where it currently sits in the league and Barnsley therefore are bigger than - dare I say it 'the likes of' Aston Villa for example.

Doesn't sound daft at all pal. You have to be careful what you wish for in the " wealthy owner" department.

So many clubs have now gone down that route that any advantage has been long lost.

Maybe all they have left for fans of those clubs is to be able to say "teams like Barnsley"

It didn't do clubs like Liverpool and Manure any good when teams like Ipswich and Forrest were sweeping up trophies with their apparently smaller following ,
They don't like it up em Captain Mainwaring

I take it as a back-handed complement from nob-heads with delusions of grandeur.

I suppose this partly explains the "teams like Barnsley" mentality in the case of some Cardiff and Wigan fans.

Maybe it's because they're to young to remember when they didn't have a new ground and rich ownership?

Maybe reading this would give them a bit of perspective of where they've come from over the last 40 yrs or so.

"Teams like Barnsley" played further up the pyramid for a large chunk of that time, and drew better crowds.

People seem to care more about how many shirts they sell in Malaysia than how many points they have in the table.
