I've read this a few times regarding Sam Morsy

That we should have agreed personal terms with him in the last 4 months.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that be illegal? Agreeing personal terms with a player belonging to another club without the other club's permission.

We probably didn't think they'd recall the loan at the start of January considering he was told he would never play for Wigan again.

Have a bit of faith in our club for once that we'll get a deal over the line prior to the next league game, afterall he's only missed one league match, which we won.

Would have thought agreeing a fee means we automatically have permission to talk to the player?

Or just through general chat at the very least we'd have asked him what he wanted and told him what we would be willing to offer?

Even if for some reason we couldn't officially chat terms with him until January it should have still only taken a few days surely.

I'd imagine we wouldn't have been able to discuss terms with him until we've had a bid accepted; we couldn't put a bid in until his loan had come to an end.

I don't think it was actually confirmed that he'd been recalled until Wednesday ish, so it's really only been a couple of days in reality.

There would have been nothing to stop terms being discussed in friendly chit chat. It would seem odd to not find out what a player you want to sign wanted and to tell him what you'd be willing to offer.

I find it very hard to believe there has been no discussion with the agent, official or not along the lines of "what sort of salary would your client be looking for, we are thinking about so much" before he arrived. Unless the agent has suddenly moved the goalposts and is asking for a lot more based on SM impressive performances.

Think this is most likely scenario. Before Morsy had no future at Wigan. Now, not only does he have a future they are likely to be offering to up his wage.

So we either offer him what he wants or we move on.

Correct. I'd like to hope it was sorted either way next week. Can't be having it drag on.

    That's not how agents work.
They'll maximise to the fullest and squeeze every moment ( penny) they can.

Don,t look good for the rest of our out of contract players if we can,t agree terms with him.

I don't know whether we will be able to or not but we have to have faith in the system we have adopted that brought these players through in the first place and hope theres more to come.
We can't be thinking the system is broken or unsustainable because we can't keep the players ,we have to believe there's others out there that will step up or come in and carry the plan on.

Do we have the option to sign him in January, or just at the end of the season?

Well one or two have tried that over the years. I particularly remember a German? left back with a very good shot who we took on short term with a view to making it longer - he played well so we tried to give him a longer contract but he wanted lots more dosh so we told him to take a hike - think he had to go to Turkey to get another club. Just cant remember his name.

But regarding Morsy we dont know if thats the case at all. Though if Wigan now want to keep him and offer him much better terms than we can I can understand why he might stay there

    I wouldn't worry too much.

Personal terms doesn't necessarily mean we can't agree on a wage. Could be anything. Contracts can be pretty complicated, bonuses based on starts, sub appearances etc, number of appearances over a season. He could have clauses in his contract with Wigan that his agents trying to get him at Barnsley too

I think that Barnsley have had in recent years a policy of making an offer, leave it open for a limited time period, and, if not accepted, withdraw the offer and move on. I think that is the right approach as that way the players have to think twice about holding on while their agents look for better offers. I think they should continue to do this so it is very clear to out of contract players there is a risk in not accepting offers that are on the table. I appreciate that the better players will be confident of getting something better, however there is a big risk for us if we gamble on them signing and leave it too late to get replacements. I somehow think the club will have built in contingency plans for if any of the players do not renew. Let's face it they have done well with recruitment recently.

That's correct and as I said earlier we can't abandon or deviate from the policy we set out with at the first sign a player doesn't re sign or wants a move.
I have no problems with that tbh, it's a job and naturally you want the best pay, conditions, rewards and satisfaction and appreciation that's on offer.
Most players don't hold clubs to ransom nor sacrifice their potential careers for a club and in most cases in the football world there's an understanding of that and work for a compromise.
I believe our policy has worked so far be sure we have the proper structure and personal in place and if players move on or don't make it theres a policy in place to sustain, maintain and hopefully better the situation.

Great post . We should stick rigidly to our transfer and recruitment policy although it's a little harder this year than last and as Hecky says we can't keep finding diamonds. Linton Brown needs to earn his stripes this month .

I really want Sam Morsy at the club. The frustration here is that we just don't know what's going on and nor do I expect that we should. I do 100% agree with others who have stated that we shouldn't deviate from the policy / programme / business model (call it whatever you want) which has worked so well and which is another wonderful Patrick Cryne legacy to the club.
Continue to recruit prodigious young talent from lower league clubs, continue to give them excellent development and if needs be then let them move on. Like all of us I want to keep Conor and Sam and josh and Marley et al but the method and modus operandi of our club is working a treat. Don't change it. I don't want any of them to leave and I really really want Sam Morsy to come back. However if he doesn't then we move on. Nobody is indispensable.

Can our current policy get us to the premier League?
What could hecky and his staff do with ready made championship players?
Are we happy with establishing ourselves in the championship only? Does anyone think we have a policy or ideas about how we get to the next level?
When our current players leave there is a big chance we will have to go through a period of struggling until the new ones get up to speed.
We have been spoiled with the success of the last 12 months and what is the majority of the fans expectations now?
