Going to the match tomorrow, because the young lad next door is a Cambridge mascot (I live in Duxford just outside Cambridge). Just checked and the last time I was in the Abbey Stadium was January 29th 1983 with the Glavin/McCarthey side. Remember they were a long ball side and we lost 1 - 0. Anybody else remember that game?
Oh yes Horrible day out crap match and if memory serves me right I also went twice before in that season in league and league cup. Didn't win any. Awful ground and would never go there again. Feeling ill just thinking about it.
FA cup match wasn't it, like you say, terrible game.........got lucky at a barn dance later that night.....lol
I saw the Reds at The Abbey stadium twice (League lost 2-1 and League Cup won 3-1) I lived in Cambridge from late 78 to late 82. I was living in Derby in January 1983. I often went to watch Cambridge back then, they had a few decent players, Alan Biley being one that stands out.
Parked coaches in a field. Full of cows. The Cambridge. Fans tried running running acrossfield after game to attack. Us. The sooner retreated
Hope you (and the mascot) enjoy the game, e-red. I went to that game in 1983, and stayed in Cambridge for the weekend, whilst living near Oxford. Five years later, in 1988, I moved to Foxton just outside Cambridge and have been here ever since. So there's obviously at least 3 of us living in Cambridge who are Reds supporters and who post on the BBS (me, e-red and Cambridge Red). A couple of years ago my son was invited to take part in some research at the University to have a MRI brain scan. The lady in charge noticed his BFC shirt and told us that her husband was a season ticket holder!!
I lived in Cambridge from December 78 to December 82, so I missed that game. I went to 2 games (as far as I can remember) a 2-1 defeat in the D2 and a 3-1 win in the League Cup, I seem to remember Banks scoring in that game. Just checked the fixtures and I'm sure I would have been at the 1-1 draw in 1982 but I have no memory of it. I remember talking to some mates and they were gushing about our midfield after the League Cup game, McHale, Banks, Glavin and Barrowclough. Hell of a midfield.
There's also another Reds supporter living in the same village as me (Balsham). Between us we've manage to provide another 4 'southern' reds (2 boys each). They'll be six of us at the Fulham game (plus one for Fulham). My eldest (16) is actually keener than me. I used to take him to watch Arsenal occasionally, as I'd 'allowed' him to have a Premiership club team as well, but once he reached the age of 11 he blew them off and is strictly a tyke now. Currently working on his accent but not holding out much hope to be honest... he insists on putting an 'r' in words like 'bath'. The little one (9) is also getting keener although I think that's got more to do with full english we have at a cafe when we go to home games.
