Did you read the words directly after the selective part of my post which you quoted?

What's the point of a contract if you can scoot off at any time subject to your agent finding a better payer? Winnall had a few months of his contract left and the interests of BFC should have been are paramount. Selling him to Wednesday - currently a rival - is inexcusable and I don't give a monkeys what his agent thinks. He's under contract and the only beneficiaries of what's happened are Wednesday, Sam's bank balance and his representatives who take their cut, not this great club. If we cave in every time this happens then the "strategy" we have amounts to nothing more than talent spotting for bigger clubs. Sam would have ended up at a 'bigger' club and fatter salary even if we had told him to wait until June. More than anything for me - this a question of timing (which we had control of) - not a criticism of Sam wanting a more lucrative move

Chill, wasnt havin a pop, I'm in the minority on here in that I see the sense in most ( not all) of your posts. I was inferring that the most likely scenario was that they prob tapped him up. He prob wasnt high on their want list but they probably felt it would derail our challenge.

Not everyone is satisfied earning minimum wage. There is no right or wrong here, everyone is free to chase their individual dream.

I know you wasnt, I was being sarcy :)

What most likely happened is that HE tapped them up. I reckon he's wanted out for a while and has told the club that (as per the statement) and when we played them the there week he let them know that if they made an offer he'd join them

I agree with the OP on this one. To me, it would make sense for any of our lads with contracts running down to stick it out with us until the summer, play regularly in a team doing well in the Championship, keep impressing the scouts and have their pick of clubs in the close season as a free agent, and plenty of time to make a decision and negotiate a tasty contract. Surely an agent could then persuade an interested party that any the fact a club will be picking up a player worth several million for free would command a sizable signing on fee for the player. The Jan payment to us would go to the player himself instead.

I'm hoping this is what Conor is thinking, particularly as a player of his ability should be heading to the Premier League, not a club a couple of places above us in the Championship. I think Conor has more respect for the footballing side of things than Sam and his ambitions lie on the pitch rather than the bank vaults. I am fairly convinced that Wednesday will be a terrible move for Sam given their style of play and the fact that he has Fletcher, Hooper and Forestieri as competition. He's jumped for the cash, but I can see Conor biding his time and getting a move to a Premier League club who will allow him to prove his credentials at the top level and impress the ROI management - which is his ultimate goal.

    I love Barnsley. I ******* hate Wednesday.

If I played for Barnsley, though, even with the adoration I have for us, I'd still be off like a shot if Wednesday offered me four times my salary at Oakwell.

Nothing would hold me back, and this is coming from a season-ticket holder who's been all over the country with Barnsley. I'd pull every unpleasant stunt I had to in order to get out of my contract as quickly as I could. I'd go on strike, fake injury, skip training, whatever I had to do.

So if I'd go to those lengths, why should an Arsenal-supporting midlands lad have any loyalty whatsoever to us? All the badge-kissing sentiment in the world doesn't hide the fact that footballer is just another job, and you want to maximise your earnings when the opportunity is there. I'm sorry he's gone, but I'd be doing exactly the same.
