Glad you liked the sketch! To be honest I think that at my age I'd look a bit daft wearing a replica shirt. I did manage to get one for a mate in Austria just before Christmas, but I had a lot of help for which I was very grateful. As far as I know it's a "leftover" from the Ben Mansford days and it's something the club are aware of and, in time, it will change. I hope it does because it could be a money earner for the club in addition to any other income we have.
"7. In the end, the club must act in it own best business interests, unclouded by the interests of the player or the ambitions of the fans" That one line is all that is needed... It ort to be put above the entrance as folk go in
No. But that wasn't my point and you know it. No one ever achieved anything exceptional by setting limits based on previous or current accepted thinking.
you can blame empty advertising spaces, lack of replica shirts etc all you want, these are a drop in the ocean compared to the parachute payments we are up against..Then as already said, you get clubs with very wealth owners,Patrick has done a great job of keeping us going, but its still not enough to compete against the bigger clubs.Parachute payments and wealthy owners dwarf the sale of cuddly toby tykes lol. Money has ruined football to the point where many people dont bother anymore, they see young millionaires not giving a toss about the fans, they read about agents and their wheeling and dealing, transfer sagas, you name it theres plenty of reasons why people dont bother anymore, the whole football pyramid is so outrageously unfair its having a knock on effect..Ticket prices put other people off, clubs try a balancing act to try and get revenue in on one hand and keep people coming through the gates with the other, all so they can try and compete against one another.
That's the spirit. 8 teams get parachute payments so we should roll over because the gap to those 8 is too high. How about we try to close the gap to EVERYONE ELSE even if it is just by a fraction? An extra 52k from the club shop per year and it's a grand a week n a players wages.
i'm not saying roll over,i'm just pointing out that parachute payments and wealthy owners dwarf club shop revenues..The club are trying to fill the advertising spaces,i got a phone call from them asking if i wanted one,as did all the other convenience stores in barnsley,i also know that they were actively targeting takeaways, cafes, pubs and restaurants, you cant make people shell out 2k a time to have a advertising hording facing the east stand. yes it was ridiculous that we ran out of replica shirts and other stuff but the extra revenue we could have generated is a drop in the ocean compared to parachute payments.
A very accurate assessment - it begs the question why do we still go to watch Barnsley in what is basically an unfair footballing world?
I was talking about the poster boards that sit empty within the concourses. They should at the very least have an 'advertise here for as little as xxx' poster in them so that everybody passing sees the price instead of the lucky few who get a call. Out of interest what is your shop? Might as well support a Barnsley fans business if it's local to me
Nice try - but totally wrong. We have had this discussion now for 3 or 4 days. Let's recap: We can't compete with most wages paid by other teams in this league So we develop players and sell them on But this hasn't happened with Winnall and it looks likely it's going to be the same with Hourihane Why.......because the club has failed to give them contracts I'm not one bit bothered that Winnall has been transferred But I'm extremely angry that he has been given away for £500k AND he has been sold to a Sheffield / Leeds club
completely agree with that and have held similar views for a long time too. When the premier league began that was the beginning. It has attracted players from overseas in abundance, the knock on affect means local/British players have been knocked down the order and the divisions. To this end so have the teams. Many players now would have been in the top flight 25/30+ years ago but now they are the cream of the championship. It was always gonna be the case once the Prem was born,
I'd be interested to know your costed business case for making an extra 52k from the club shop ....if you can supply that you'd be head hunted by M&S to turn them round.
Well thats contrary to what Hourihane has indicated But if that was the case - as Red Rain as eluded to - these players must be sold or put on Gardening Leave. The club has to announce that these individual players can not hold the club to ransom. We have found ourselves now with a successful team - and half of them could leave for next to nowt in the next few weeks Absolutely ridiculous situation
You can't suspend somebody for 12 months nudger, don't be a daft. We have come a long way from slavery and forcing somebody to sign a contract is wrong. What you can do though is take action against the player if they decide they want to leave mid contract and become disruptive in order to force a move.
All valid points in their own right but hardly any help in affording wages like teams are paying out, e.g. Sam Winnall 18k a week. We cannot possibly sell enough shirts, sell enough advertising, sell enough beer and snap etc etc to make up this shortfall
Sorry to be pedantic here, but I never even hinted at putting a player on gardening leave. That would be silly.
