8th in the championship on a bottom 3 budget, and people are surprised that we're selling a player shortly out of contract for £4m?

I'm more concerned about who we bring in, we'll have over £20 million in the transfer kitty if/when Connor goes, probably take £6 million out of that due to PC saying the Stones money will go back into the Academy.

The sticking point is wages we can offer and there's not much we can do about that at the moment. Fact is our turnover is really small and this is going to make our job really difficult because we can't ever pay players enough. Scowen's Dad wants the club "to put it's money where it's mouth is" which translates to "pay him the same as he can get elsewhere or he's unlikely to sign a contract."

You and many of the others on here are missing the point about finance.

Have any of the moaners even bothered to look at the clubs accounts.

    2014-2015 we lost £3m
2015-2016 imagine we might just have broken even, if Wembley trips got us £3m?
2016-2017 yes we should have made a profit. Obviously higher turnover but also higher expenses. But how long do you want the club to survive?

Our last turnover in Championship Was £9m. Our last expenditure in the championship was £11m.

Our turnover in League one is £5m. Expenses of £7m.

If we paid our starting 11 £10k/week that would be £6m expenses on just 11 players!!

Yes we have sold Mawson and Received more for Stones & Holgate. But that will cover off our last 3 years of making a loss, some investment in increased wages, and cover off the fact that we will make a loss going forward.

Seriously suggest people look into the financials before saying we are "putting money under the mattress"

In comparison our entire turnover minus player sales is £10m. Villa and Fulham have wage bills of £60m.

Be thankful we have a club, be thankful that club is currently doing better than most other clubs in this league.

I realise not many people will give a **** about long term survival of our club, or just how low our turnover is. But for those interested it makes you realise just what a great job those in charge, both behind the scenes and on the pitch are doing.

Correct. As I've been saying, reality bites and no one likes it as you can't keep finding diamonds and "over-achieving".

And we are so close to making the playoffs but with each departure this drifts away.

Unreal. After everything we've achieved over the last 12 months, we currently sit 8th with funds like we've never had before, to consolidate our future. This is arguably the strongest we've ever been as a Club.

Why are we making losses though? We take the piss out of clubs like Sheffield Wednesday for having a board spending money outside of their annual incomings but we are doing the same. Granted to a much lower level but that's because we are a smaller club.

It's not though is it - not if we sell our best players and don't recruit. The situation on 1st Feb could be totally different to what it was on 1st Jan.

Have you not just reiterated my point. We are striving to be self sufficient. If Cryne didn't write off his loans we would be millions in debt.

Our turnover, even with selling a few players, is small. And people are clamouring for us to offer higher wages than we already do - thus increasing the operating deficit that already exists.

If we did increase wages, say by £2m a year (about £1.5k/week per player in a squad of 23) then our projected defecit would increase to £4m/£5m.

3 years at that defecit and we've burnt through the player sales for everyone in the last 2 years!

If we got relegated with those kind of expenses we would be quickly heading to admin once more.

To be fair according to you we were going to be relegated into Division 2 at the start of January last year. You should try optimism, it's quite healthy in reasonable doses :)

I'm not missing the point mate, and I'm certainly not a moaner [well sometimes maybe a little ] . I understand we have to be prudent and I'm all for selling players at the right time for profit , but surely not our best 3/4 players within a month of each other .To say we should 'be thankful just to have a club' is nonsense . We are currently 8th in Championship with a realistic chance of the playoff's and at a real crossroads in our history . I suppose it comes down to personal expectations of the club you support and what you are happy to watch on a Saturday afternoon .

Came out wrong - wasn't suggesting you were one of the moaners. Perhaps yours was the wrong message to reply to.

I was just stressing the fact that people clamouring to pay higher wages to keep hold of players, or to risk losing out on a supposed £8m pay day for 2 players out of contract in the summer should realise just what a tiny turnover we have.

I love watching us. I love that we are doing well in the league. I would never want us to gamble to reach the "promised land" if it risked our future. By lucky to have a club I mean we are lucky to have a club. Without Patrick we would be neck deep in debt and heading out of existence.

As long as we have 11 players giving their heart and soul, a manager who bleeds Barnsley red, an owner who cares about the survival of the club longer than 3 or 4 seasons, then I'll support this club.

I might be a minority but I like that we are a small community, a local club. I don't care if we never have a fan in China or Thailand.

I think people are more concerned that we've only got a young loan in, in an already wafer thin squad.
