For me, Allan Clarke had by far and away the greatest impact on our club. He was like a whirlwind round Oakwell and the town. Special mentions, too, for Gwyn Thomas, Steve McPhail & Jacob Burns. But the worst was John Pearson.
It was more I think after Clarke came back the second time we enquired and ran away when we were told the price.
I remember it being a lot less than that. Batty hadn't made that many first team starts when we went after him.
£400,000 was the figure, I think, which was a heck of a lot at the time for a player with so little first team experience.
I loved Thomas the Tank, I well remember the day that git from Chelsea (Graham Roberts?) ended his career, FA Cup tie we won 4-0.
Yep, was him - supposed Chelsea hard man who Thomas turned into a quivering wreck, so he stamped on his leg. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/fa_cup/7276231.stm
