Cameron McGeehan could be in line for one of January's most extraordinary transfers – just a month after breaking his leg.
The Luton midfielder is due to miss the rest of the season after his serious injury for the Hatters at Portsmouth on January 2 in a League Two clash.
Late speculation that Championship Barnsley are giving serious thought to signing the starlet for £500,000 this month.
The Tykes have sold Conor Hourihane, James Bree and Sam Winnall this month and know they could face bigger rivals for McGeehan when fit next season.
Ex-Norwich trainee McGeehan, 21, was on several Championship club's radar after scoring 11 goals this term.
Luton are mindful his contract is up in 2018 and are tempted to cash in now with the star set to miss the rest of the season.
His injury, when he was infamously booked for punching the pitch in pain, is considered a clean break which is expected to heal well.

Big gamble imo but that lad was a big talent before he broke his leg.

I'd go for it. Fit for next season. A broken leg isn't much to worry about in the big scheme of things. Other than Ollie Watkins or Dack one of the few signings I would get genuinely over excited about.

Huge gamble - Richard Kell anyone

I think 500K is too much for someone who is set to miss the rest of the season and may not come back the same player, might be worth a punt if we can get him for less than that though - save Luton paying his wages when he cant play

Would then have McGeehan, Moncur, Williams and Mowett who play the number 10 / attacking midfield role.

Not against it, just seems surprising. Plus... he's got a broken leg!

I don't think we are the kind of club that would chuck half a million at what's currently a broken toy that would be useless to us. If he regains fitness and gets back to his old form that got him noticed in the first place then we should go for him.

The idea of signing an injured played isn't something I can back.

I'm assuming Mowatt will play left side of central midfield and act as like a less complete Hourihane (just the attacking side) alongside Scowen or James to do his running and defensive work

Perhaps we could tempt Luton with 200k or something like that? Then every 20 games he plays give them another 200k up until 600k mark. Works out well for both sides then, because if he doesn't play it'll probably mean he couldn't rediscover his form

Everybody and their dog were looking at him before he was injured. This is probably the only way we could get him. We have to think about next season as well as the next 3 months. Our Sport Science dept has come a long way since the days of Richard Kell.

Exactly. He's not the first footballer to break a leg and play again, nor will he be the last. If he has scans and it's obvious he will heal well then why not?

Gerrim signed up. R Physios would have him ready for play off final no problem.

Bugger it. I'm going to say my first thought despite others beating me to it. Richard Kell.

He'd be a snip at anything under £500k, as they were quoting £750k in the summer. I'd go for it and see him has an investment for the future. Very impressive and not 'tin ribs' like Kell. This is a seriously robust central midfielder, who commands the centre field and dictates play well. a bit like a more muscular Ray McHale. Go for it.

Do you think someone has been reading this board though? Is that where the rumour has come from?

They'll have us signing Ollie Watkins next!! Strong rumour about Ryan Hedges, though. looks likely to happen,

£500'000 is peanuts for someone of his quality, 18 month deal with a 2 year extension option, or something similar and it's a risk we can't turn down in my opinion, let's face it Luton we're rumoured to have turned down a £1M bid for him from Brentford in the last window, if our scouts have been watching him closely even though he's valued so highly, and they've told the club and Heckingbottom that it's a risk worth taking then given their recent track record of identifying players I'm more than willing to trust their judgment on this one.
