At the end of the day the question the club asked is "Will he score goals at this level?" If they dont think he will then his value is somewhat irrelevant (given that although £1m is a good chunk of money we're clearly able to afford that sort of money at the moment). If they think he would have scored goals then that £1m would probably be (in the stupid grand scheme of football valuation) good value given you're looking at him then being worth several more millions.

Clearly they didnt think he was up to the task so they decided not to put a bid in.

We were in the same position at the end of last season. Worked out fine so far. Hecky clearly tried to get a striker but it didn't come off, not the end of the world with Bradshaw, Armstrong, Watkins as first choice and Brown and Hedges (maybe) as back up. As i said I was discussing Omar Bogle and the fact that it made sense to me to not pay 1 million for a striker unproven at this level.

What era are you living in now with players transfers? Our Under 23s star Moncur cost £500,000-£600,000, Jordan Rhodes has cost £10 million, a league side sold a 19 year old for £10 million. Promotion to the Championship is now worth £6 million, Barnsley are charging £30-£38 a ticket for some games and getting 16-18,000, ST sales are at a 10 year high...

£750,000 for a young League two striker who was on course to smash 30 goals in his first season in the football league is the going rate not a "gamble".

We will see how he gets on, lets hope he doesn't do a Charlie Adam or Adam Le Fondre..

Not necessarily the case. Unless I've missed the official announcement.

    Re: Queensbury Rules?

Being loaned out usually signifies the kiss of death.

Payne is no spring chicken. He was the only striker with a bit of physical stature.

We've put him out to grass when we have no similar alternative at the club.

He might get more game time in League 1 but it is more than possible that we may have quite a few games near the end of the season with little at stake so he could get a run out for us.

And whilst absent he misses out on what our wonderful coaches can teach him.

    Kiss of death.

Exactly - we need to get with the programme.
First and foremost we need to show some ambition and talk about the teams around us as if we have a right to be amongst them.

Without being negative unnecessarily, this window has not been a success by anybody's measure.
I'm sure there are some reasons beyond our control, but I'm also sure there are some things the club needs to get much better at.
Personally, I think it was an urgent issue and when the chief exec went, we should have brought someone in short term in that role. I say it was urgent because we might have to wait another 20 years before were sitting in touching distance of the playoffs And carrying the momentum we have built over the last 12-months under Hecky.

That means sorting out our back-office, and being positive in our decision making.
We needed to get more of our deals done in other words.

If we're counting winger/forwards then come the summer we'll have Bradshaw and Hedges.

By the summer we'll have 2 forwards with Championship experience where as last season we had Winnall and Watkins who had none.

Stretching the point beyond breaking point given that Hedges as not played professionally as a forward only as a winger and Marley had done so both before coming to us and after. Might as well say we also have Hammill.

Played upfront for Leyton Orient. He's a striker and a winger like Marley. Ask Hecky and the lad himself.

His goalscoring record and the Orient fans say otherwise. Let's just leave it you think it's a grand idea to flog all our players replace em with loans and to have one forward at the end of the season. I'm less keen but you are entitled to your views. Ryan Kent is also described as a winger/forward not sure I'd fancy him up front on his own on Saturday...

Its the club who didn't sign him not me?

Really suprised you're going with the 'I told you so' after 1 start.

I remember Leroy Lita scoring a few early doors.
