So, this morning, a week after the window shut, Heckingbottom says there shouldn't have been a full programme of games on the night and it probably stopped him signing a striker he wanted. I think it was common knowledge to all who work in football and all who support football from the day the fixtures were published that would be the case, and the manager sat next to the owner at a pre season q & a when he said categorically Sam Winnall would NOT sign a contract at the end of the season.
It has always puzzled me that these things are left so late, when there's been a whole month to sort them out.
In this case it was 6 months, Cryne categorically stated pre season that Sam Winall would not sign a new contract.
The inference given at the meeting was that Winnall would see out his contract until the end of the season.
According to most reports I have seen it was Winnall that called the shots and pushed for the move. Hardly a case of cashing in.
Tends to be player related. Unfortunately they've got the power nowadays. E.g a player at a big club on a big contract where's he's not wanted has an offer on the table from a smaller club but is reluctant to sign it as he's hoping another club will come in & offer him more money before the window shuts. Drags on & on until he gets the move close to the end of the window until it finally happens & then a domino effect tends to happen where the buying club then sell a player who's surplus to requirements because of the new player & so on. It must be frustrating though, especially when you've no chief exec, the chairmans receiving cancer treatment & you've got a match on deadline day.
