The footage has finally made it onto player after some technical issues and, being at a loose end this morning, I thought I would have a look just to confirm what I remembered from last Tuesday. It's actually worse than I remembered! That incident in the 91st minute should be enough to ensure that Mr Kavanagh never referees a professional match ever again. It started with him dropping the ball for the Wolves player to roll it to Davies, giving us back possession after an injury. What followed just doesn't make any sense. Davies collected it and then carried it well outside the box. He put it down again maybe five yards beyond his area, as if he thought it was a free kick but, of course, the ball was live. The ref was out of shot but can't have been that far away - same for the linesman who usually goes back to check what the keeper is doing regarding getting rid of the ball. How could neither of them not see it? It was incredulous at the time; it's even worse watching back on the replay. It was just one of many, many poor decisions by the referee and he did another one three minutes later with the free kick on the edge of their box. He half-heartedly marched out about seven yards and then drew his line. Scowen was furious, pacing out the distance just to show the ref he had it wrong. That was enough for a booking for dissent but he ignored it, as did he ignore Scowen's protests going back to the half way line. It was another example of monumental incompetence and surely, SURELY something will be done about him once the authorities have seen his performance. That doesn't help us of course - the match isn't going to be replayed because the referee didn't know how to do his job. The Hecky incident (60th minute) was another example of course with our head coach being sent off for no good reason that was obvious from the footage. In the 65th minute their player Edwards tried to get Scowen's shirt off his back and then fouled him again for good measure, near the Ponty end. The ref shamefully only gave him a yellow and then let the player get in his face with blatant dissent, presumably claiming he had done nothing wrong. Apart from that......there was some good football from us and if Hammill had managed to score when he turned in the box (81st minute) we could have got something out of it. It was just one of those nights when everything went against us, including having a hot head making his debut and getting rightly sent off.
It was a surreal moment with Davies. I think the referee was so out of control by that point he didn't register what happened. I don't know that the ref cost us, because he was inept all round (didn't spot a penalty to each side). As regards Hecky, the bother clearly starts with the Wolves bench trying to retain the ball while we are chasing the game. A very clear provocation which unfortunately, Hecky didn't ignore. It was the same with Wagner at Huddersfield on Sunday. Huge arrogance to go running onto the field and then come back past Monk gloating. Garry will get some punishment for his part, but Wagner should have the book thrown at him.
I think Mowatt's "tackle" was more him trying too hard as opposed to him being a hot head. I thought he was having a decent game before that too.
People love it when Conte & Klopp do it though? I never used to mind Monk, can't stand the lad now though.
The linesman was 30 yards away running towards the half-way line with his back to Davies. I looked to see where he was when I saw Davies carry it too far. The ref wasn't paying attention either.
They were both very much in the wrong but that falls in with their performance the whole night. The only one of the three with any credit at all was the west stand linesman who managed to persuade the fool in the middle to overturn his penalty decision. Those events are very rare and with a crescendo of abuse coming from the ponty end they both showed courage to do that.
