It's looking the sheer volume of people reading the site is causing the issues we've been seeing the last couple of weeks. Options are as follows. 1) Upgrade the server to a more powerful one and upgrade the OS and MYSQL db at the same time. Cost would be 71+ Vat a month. (OUCH). I'd probably for contributions and/or trial adding a couple of adverts on to see if that helps pay for the forum. 2) Try new forum software such as XenForum that is not as resource hungry but we'd lose threaded posts and probably some other functionality and it would probably work slightly differently so there would be a period of adjustment. Is this a big deal to folk? Would also require work to migrate and brand the new forum. A new licence would need to be bought for whatever Forum software we went with. 3) Try and keep the current one running by adding in further caching. Got a VBulletin expert looking at this and waiting a price. It might not be too expensive but might still have to do 1). I've been trying to keep the site up and running but some of the time I've been at the mercy of the hosts to restart the server when all access is lost. What's everyone's thoughts? By the way there's a Facebook where I'll post updates as well: https://www.facebook.com/groups/BarnsleyFCBBS/
at the moment it says there are 328 users...... it then says there are 41 members .... TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY ONE GUESTS... are the 281 contributing to the sites problems... if so they are the ones that need to be axed
Make it so you have to sign in to read the forum. That should cut down on external guests. Theres currently on 60 members signed in, but 283 guests. Who are they?
Totally agree I will wager while there are many who are just fans... I will also wager that agents etc and paparazzi etc are the guests
I'd rather pay a few quid than have adverts, personally. Also, please don't make it so that you have to sign in to read. Always like reading other forums for their opinions on games and I find it really frustrating!
Well we've already got some caching in place in front of the server which means about half of the requests coming in are now served from a CDN (Cloudflare). Will probably try the additional caching first but I'm not sure how much its going to help. We archive the posts into a seprate forum which does help with performance but I already did that with posts older than a month.
Something has (for me) definitely gone wrong in recent days. If you can arrange for a monthly subscription that would be fine by me. Providing subscribers get special privileges e.g. automatic block on Dragon Tyke posts, colour pics of JLWBLIL in his wrestling outfits, videos of Come Dine with Me specials involving Young Nudger/ Hemsie/The Reev and RedRain, and priority ale queue in the East Stand at half time.
That's essentially what cloudflare does. Half the http requests are now served from cache. Having said that its the page loads that generate the CPU issues since they dynamic
What specs are you looking at for the £71 + VAT a month? There are some powerful enough servers on here (or at least they should be more than powerful enough to host 400 connections) for a lot less. Also comes with free DDoS protection etc. https://www.kimsufi.com/uk/servers.xml
Can't say I'm familiar with cloud fare. But if is essence that what it does then I'd have to have a think. What about session times to reduce the number of concurrent users
Could we ask Conor to give us a bit? He'll not know what to do with all his extra cash at the moment.
You know my opinion @Gally. xenforo is miles better than VB, and other than threaded view there's nothing it doesn't have that VB does and it needs a fraction of the resources that VB needs. also defo don't need to be paying £71pm
