£12 A year for something that passes many a happy hour away now that's a bargin go for it I say....sign me up...no adverts for me that's one of my main beefs with tykes mad to name but one.... Why not sound folk out..on how they feel..the best way forward
many are members who are just looking but not signing in as they are not posting ( I admit to sometimes coming on to see what has been posted but dont sign in uless looking for notifications or planning to post either a new thread or contribute to one. I am sure lots of others must do the same.
2 adverts - one to sponser the main site and have their logo at the top - £40ppm and one in the posts just below the post count of £35ppm. Sure 2 local companies would be up for paying that for the local coverage they would get. Non intrusive to content and the surplus goes in to cover periods of when no sponsor and price rises.
I'd pay £15 p.a. to keep things as they were until very recently. Don't quite get the fact this has only just recently happened though since the number of concurrent users doesnt necessarily seem any greater than before. Nor does the unavailability occur at peak times (unless people on here keep really weird hours) I can understand Saturday early evening after a match but other times, especially during the day when people are supposedly working and not too many people logged in e.g.. ALL this afternoon??
I don't like the registered users only option and I would hazard a guess like tekkytyke said that a lot of the guests viewing are actually members who aren't signed in. Until a few seconds ago I was one of those. For me personally the xenforo option is no problem but I think (you'll know better than me) that a lot of members do still use threaded view. I've given up with it because I don't think vbulletin's effort is any good at all but there must be quite a few using it because of the amount of times I see people mention that they don't have the likes/thanks buttons showing which is the threaded folk. Paying for a better server? Well to be honest 70 odd quid a month is nothing really is it between the members. The only problem that I can see there is when you want to ban somebody and they feel justified in making their comments because they help pay for the site. I'm not saying anybody would be like that but it is a possibility. If it was up to me, and I know it isn't, I'd pop it onto registration only just for the short term because at the moment that would be better than it going down every 2 minutes but I would set up a donation button to raise funds, I think that could get more money than a subscription service and also alleviate the feeling entitled problem. I'd also be looking for one title sponsor or a few that load randomly so there is only one advert showing at a time in the area next to the logo. It would hardly be intrusive or harm anyone's viewing of the forum would it.
If the site was subscription wouldn't that stop fans of other clubs visiting too? I know most are just on the wind up but some are decent fans who like to contribute
^^THIS^^ As SuperTyke says, you could have several "site sponsors" with only one advert showing at any one time in the title area. I would happily be a site sponsor for a sensible monthly fee. I'm not a locally based company, so the "rewards" to me are minimal. Maybe get 5 or so other businesses onboard and funding problem solved. I am a member of a car forum (not a sponsor) who run this sort of model, with several sponsors but only one small ad appearing at a time. The sponsors are obviously businesses associated with that brand of car - but usually small businesses rather than main dealers. This model would avoid having lots of adverts like Tykesmad, or subscriptions etc. Contact me if you wish, Gally.
From my experience with the flag I wouldn't use crowdunder, it cost us 6% and PayPal took another 3.5%, 9.5% in total.
Gally I work for a web development company, I'll find out how much we pay to host web sites and see if I could get any sort of discount. How much have we been paying and how is it funded?
Happy to contribute to running costs. Would accept a site sponsor if needed to raise funds but please no pop ups maybe I am in a minority but I just love the threaded view. It is so much better and it does give the site its own unique feel. My puzzlement though is what's changed. I don't think we are getting significantly more visitors now than a couple of months ago or at the end of last season and even if you have 300 people viewing there are pauses between each refresh as the site so it shouldn't be such a huge drain. is it worth a temporary switch to members only for a few days to see if it improves things whilst you work out what to do long term
I'd agree with that. Shouldn't be a subscription service so that people who don't contribute anything to the forum can continue to view it for free. Sign in to view is a good thing as it keeps the forum running quicker the way it has for years.
