We rent it. I rent my house and when the gas fire stopped working, I asked my landlord to get it fixed. The club should demand that our landlord makes the West Stand "fit for purpose"........ And paint it.
Oakwell is in a secure trust to protect it's future from the Peter Doyles of this world. The trustees are the football club and the local authority.
I don't think it's quite as simple as that, but even if it is then you're mixing up commercial and residential leases. I rent a flat and a shop from the same landlord. If the boiler in my flat stops working I call him, but if the boiler in the shop packs in then it's on me.
That's what i thought which is why talk of "buying back the ground" seems pointless. Cryne didn't do it to make money but to stop future owners from buying the club with the sole purpose of developing the land.
I was only joking mate. Of course it's not as simple as that..... But neither is building a new West Stand.
Where does this leave the club in respect of the West Stand? Can we build a new one? Would a New West Stand be owned by the club or still 50/50 in trust?
I can't answer that mate. I just remember the statement from many years ago, which is often misunderstood. I believe neither party can act without the others consent.
No the football club isn't an owner of the ground. The club itself pays rent to Oakwell Community Assets Ltd and I believe the club also have responsibility for maintenance within this arrangement. This company is owned by Barnsley Council and Patrick. Patrick engineered it this way to protect the future of the club.
In a commercial lease, the tenant usually ends up with a full repairing agreement. I imagine (though don't know) that is what the club will have with Oakwell Community Assets.
thats not going to happen is it we rarely come close to filling our capacity as it is. So why would a new stand be a priority.
I don't know how we could have a new west stand. I have read some people say it could be built in the same space as the west currently occupies. I have only been in the west stand a few times so just presumed this was right. but looking at the pic on the website there doesn't seem much room on the right hand side due the the road being on an angle to the ground
Some of these new stands are so steep they don't need to go back as much. The stand opposite the main stand at Bradford forget what it's called, used to be like an old shed with a steep drop to the street below.
If only they knocked down that school opposite and did some jiggery pokery with the road. If only one of the owners of the club has some influence on planning and land decisions in the borough.
I thought that schools already been purchased and has planning permission for houses. Think Barnsley has missed the boat with that
Just had a look and a measure on google maps satellite images. The West stand is currently around 102m x 25m. The stand at the side at bradford is 103m x 23m:
