You obviously mean the second tier when you say Championship as it didn't exist in that name for those 2 seasons you refer to in your title. I don't know the answer except it'll obviously from the season when 3 points for a win came into being.
When you say championship, are you talking the second tier under whichever name? That would take us back 35yrs or so. We always tended to be pretty comfortable mid table on the whole, but I can remember the season when we lost out on the playoffs to a Brighton goal in their game after we'd beaten boro 1 0. Also, it used to be two points for a win so we have to take that into consideration. If you're talking since 2006, I would imagine the Mark Robins team got most points on the board as we were safe with some to spare. That's just a guesstimate though without looking at any stats. Just gone back through the last 57 years, three points for a win was introduced in the 1981/82 season. As the Second Division, it was 74 points in the 1988/89 season. As the Championship, it was 56 points in the 2010/11 season.
65 points should be our target now for me. Five more wins, very attainable. That would represent a decent end to a good season and should be enough to secure a top half placing. I think the 56 points under Robins highlights just how many seasons of meagre returns we suffered. That was seen as the most comfortable, 'successful' season during the 8 year stint at this level. I hope we can avoid the perpetual battle to reach 50 points, but I see a tough period ahead regardless of how well we recruit.
In the first half of the season season we got 34 points, so to get to 65 would represent an excellent return considering the players we've lost. And given our fixtures I think we can do it I'm not going to worry about next season, and tbh I'm going to give the club faith and trust that they will get it right and we'll find ourselves in a similar league position this time next year, hopefully. I think they deserve trust after the last year's success, in my opinion
Just looking at those stats, we've done really well as a club to spend so much time in the second tier. Mate I travel to games with is older in his early 60s and tells me of some pretty grim times in the years afore Clarke took the reins. Easy to criticise the club or aspects thereof, but when I consider the difference between my first game in 1978 and now, there is absolutely no comparison, and it puts things into perspective when you visit some of the grounds in the bottom two divisions, and realise lots of them are still back there where we started. My first away game was a 0-0 draw at Rotherham, August 1968. For a good few years, I had the pleasure(!) of watching players like Les Harris, Kenny Brown & Ray Petitt (for example) strut their stuff in the old Fourth Division, rarely troubling the opposition's goalkeeper, whilst we were stood on open terraces. Why was it always raining, as well?? The transport to our away matches usually used to be an old charabang (sp), with springs poking up through the seats and no heating or radio! Things can always be better at our club off the pitch, but they could be, and have been, a heck of a lot worse, too. But try telling the kids today and they won't believe you!
I was only 3! Big difference between now and then is there is little footage of those old games to be seen which is a shame really. Would be nice to see some of those lads play. My mate jack goes back even further. He can remember the 50s. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
The 1981/82 side got 67 points, from 42 games. Clarke's 88/89 side was 74 from 46. Both about same average ppg. Both were decent sides, the 81/82 particularly so. We also flogged one of our best players in the 88/89 side, John Beresford, to rivals Portsmouth for 300 grand, bought the new floodlights with it. Last third of that season we picked up 31 points out of 45, many of those games without Beresford.
I didn't realise the 3 points thing went back so far either! Feeling me age! Hey I can remember the backpass rule coming in. Caught a few keepers out in the early weeks. Andy Liddle scored at Notts County courtesy of a shanked clearance if I remember right. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
